Nope - I do exactly the same - I used to use RAID 5 years ago until a controller cacked up and I lost everything - now I mirror. Hard discs are consumable devices at the end of the day, so you need to treat them as such.

I also won't use a disc bigger that 8TB because it takes so damn long to rebuild - just too much data to lose and restore in one go.

I have a slightly different approach. I got 3 PC's they all contain a mirror of my music library. (game pc, HTPC, girlfriends PC)
On a nas is 4th copy in a raid 5 witch is powerd down.
I have no video collection to speak of. Only the current movies and series are stored (on a separate nas) until i watched them.
Music is always played from internal discs (mostly ssd) Video from nas over SMB.

I'm still waiting for a friend wanting to mirror my music collection. But most of them prefer spotify :(
Last month my neighbor burned down. So i thought i would loose it all. Lucky for me i have only some moisture issues. Praise the lord! (read fire department)

I'm still using a RAID5 setup on a 4 x HDD setup, thinking if one HDD goes ti*s up, I simply slot in another HDD and rebuild in next to no time. This NAS is years old now - a Netgear Readynas RN104. Guess it's time to rethink

Yes, that's true and I don't want to needlessly worry anyone, but in my case the controller and not the discs went mad and invalidated the data - that's when I decided I don't like proprietary RAID (I think it was a Buffalo box).

I'm sure there would have been a way to fix it but I'm all for the path of least resistance now. Hard discs are a damn site more reliable now than they used to be, but are still regarded as consumables.

That indeed is my case t00. I'm a tad or two older than you and have lost count of the number of HDDs I've bought and used and don't ask how many Floppies I've had too! And in all my life, I have never had one go cack - not a single one!

That's it now, I've tempted fate lol - but I will be exploring a replacement for my Readynas

In my case at home, I'm running a reliable Synology NAS 48tb Raid with 1000+ movies and TV series. All important files (personal movies...) are backup in separate HDD 4-bay. Actually my experience with Synology NAS has been fine at home and office. At home, just to replace one HDD with no loss at all in 3 years. In office (NAS 2-bay and 4-bay), another HDD replaced in 10 years.
A solution for many users is the cloud, not yet in my consideration.

Yes works also with BD ISO's with or without menu being used. Once known and after getting used to it no problem anymore.
Habits are strong though and did not find out myself. Thanks' again Mark. :)

I am using the backup strategy with a few 8 Tbyte drives for viewing new movies and a double archive with a drive per movie category which all spin very limited hours per year.

    Still very offtopic but (sorry)
    Regarding Raid 5.
I'm running a synology Nas in Raid 5. I thought that if the nas dies the raid5 would be recognized in a new NAS.
    Am i misinformed?

    nope, I'm the weirdo

I do three (!) drives for everything

one set is even outsourced, 'cause you never know when your home might be burned down :(

but hey, what am I jabbering about, me, the guy who only connects the Zidoos and the Sony to the outside world for firmware updates ..... don't like 'em all to know what's on my drives, what & when I watch ;)

btw, guess I checked out all the recently mentioned new DV releases and more with the Z9X 8K, almost no issues at all, just one exception, I have to use external SRTs for the older Z9X 'cause I can't figure out how to adjust 'em size, with the Z9X 8K I indeed experience stuttering when using external SRTs, sometimes that can be solved be switching from Auto-Font-Set to UTF-8, internal PGS are doing fine, not a problem on my side 'cause the Z9X 8K can handle those pretty gosh darn well :D

gotta go, buy some spare HDDs .....

Yes, that's right. In Synology, the system will migrate the data and will take several days depending the TBs to move. In QNAP, it will simply read the data and run (plug and play).

    ??
I plug in the 4 raid5 disks. What is there to move

The Synology NAS will move the data to migrate internally for the 4 mirrored HDDs. You'll hear copy and paste in disks for hours or days!!

I think Mark meant that the controller broke and destroyed the data.

I'm not afraid of raid. I have 2 QNAPs with RAID 5, with 8 4TB disks and 8 2TB disks. I have spare discs ready in case one fails. I also have a USB enclosure where everything is stored on 4 more discs.

However, the rule is - no backup, no mercy.

Even further off topic: It seems HDD's just increase in price by the year. My cheapest 16 Tbyte I got several years ago.

Yeah, it's. Quality and high capacity disks (HDD - SSD) are expensive depending on the market demand. We're really pressed/controlled by leading high tech manufacturers.

That's right, I bought my last hard drive a year ago, a refurbished one Seagate Exos X20 16TB for 179 €. Now it costs 249 €. New one costs over 300 € (It cost 260 € a year ago)

    Also tried playing numerous DVD:
    - The player will give the choice to play with BD (not DVD) Menu or just play directly.
    - Did indeed not find a DVD that did not play at all anymore
    - Some Menus were not processed correctly. Mostly some menu items are just skipped and can't be selected. Including some multi movie discs not allowing to make a movie selection.

Yes improvement was made here too.

Ya hard bargain because of the cost and management of it. I thought the benefit of 5000+ movies and 450+ TV series' and tons of other content might be appealing enough to go for it. Just need to rub shoulders with wealthier people maybe lol.
