    Greetings All,

What's the community's opinion on the HDR settings? I have a relatively fast home network and stream from my Synology NAS to the Zidoo Z9XPro. I get great video quality with high bitrate streams and I absolutely love the Zidoo (much better than Nvidia Shield / Plex). Most of my files are 4K, HDR, MKV, high bitrate Remux. The Zidoo is connected to a Denon X3800H and an LG C3.

I currently have the HDR settings to use Dolby Vision Low Latency. Good idea? I read that it's supposed to enhance image quality. I have looked over the settings recommendation on this forum, but didn't see any detailed info about my exact question (but might have missed it). I'm looking for highest quality image settings for my setup.

Any other recommendations? Color settings, EDID?

    Thanks!

That's HT4 updating - It only does that when files are added or removed if automatic updating is on.

It's all subjective - if you're a purist set HDR to Auto then you get everything native - depends on the display and how well it handles everything and also how you perceive it.

For my Samsung flatscreen I use HDR Auto but have an LLDV EDID and an HDFury so I get everything from SDR through HLG, HDR10, HDR10+ to Dolby Vision natively.

For my projector, again I use an HDFury but I convert everything to LLDV and use a custom gamma curve to deal with that.

But above everything, trust your eyes.

Hello friends, I just received my Zidoo :)

First of all, I'd like to introduce myself: my name is José Antonio, I'm from Chile, I had an accident while taking a taxi 30 years ago, from which I got quadriplegia (in fact I'm writing to you with a stick in my mouth). After that, I studied Civil Engineering at the University, worked and then did a postgraduate degree in Systems Security. Nowadays I don't work (I'm retired) and my hobbies are: reading, music and, obviously, movies.

I had a Popcorn C-200, faithful, faithful, like a puppy. The PCH died a few months ago and there began my research to upgrade to what I considered better... choosing a Z20 Pro.

I read the forum a lot, because I am passionate about learning, even if it is a new acronym, LOL.

I applied the configuration suggested in this thread and.... everything was perfect. I watched several movies on my Home Theater and everything looked and sounded ok. One weekend I didn't use it and when I wanted to watch a movie again, last Monday... magically, I could only see a picture (perfect) but nothing sounded. Since that day I've been trying 1,001 options: checking every menu of the Receiver, the same for the Zidoo and for the TV; changing cables, reset to factory, many, many things. As the newest thing I had was the TV (I haven't installed the Soundbar yet... at the end of the month, a friend will come and help me with that), I thought that could be the link... I called Samsung and a technician connected remotely. He did an HDMI test, and played from the TV, a test file they have and it showed, and listened on the Receiver speakers.

In describing myself, I forgot to tell you that I live with one carer, Monday to Friday and another at weekends. Both are willing, but they just press the button on the remote control that I tell them to, scroll down to the menu I choose and turn on or off whatever I tell them to do. They don't do more, not because they don't want to, but because apart from rrss, they are very low-tech.

For pretty much anything, my friends have the best disposition to help me and are always willing to come on a weekend, and spend an afternoon and a large part of the night trying to find a solution. Unlike my carers, they don't just follow instructions, but come up with alternative ways that I hadn't thought of.

I have been calling several of them, to see who has availability, but when I talk to them about a Media Box, it is as if I am speaking to them in Chinese, because they have all signed up for streaming services and from then on the conversation shifts to trying to evangelise me to sell Receiver, Zidoo, etc., etc., sign up for more streaming services (I only have Netflix) and "save myself trouble". Finally they tell me that they are happy to come and help me, but since they don't know what, I'll figure out how to fix it and tell them what, how and when to do something.

...that's why I'm asking if any of you can give me some light.

Thanks in advance and have a great weekend.

    Note (as I have connected):
    a) 1 HDMI 2.1 cable from Main on the Onkyo to the HDMI e-ARC input on the TV.
    b) 1 HDMI 2.1 cable coming out of the Zidoo and going into 'STRM BOX' on the Onkyo

*All cables are 2.1 because the whole chain accepts them.

Maybe the powering up order is wrong? Try the TV first... then Onkyo and the last is Z20 Pro.

My Zidoo is on 24/7 The amp comes on at 06:00 and stays on till I go to bed. I turn the TV on last when I need it. All works smoothly. I don't like CEC so don't enable it. My equipment is listed in my signature.

So you have connected Zidoo > Amp > TV

Assuming Settings/Audio/HDMI Audio is set to "Auto" and you are on firmware later than v1.0.70 then that reads the amp's EDID and will only push out audio formats supported by the amp.

I assume that amp supports every audio format anyway so I don't think that's the issue.

The only way I can think to replicate this problem is if the file you're playing has PCM audio (or setting HDMI Audio output to LPCM) and accidentally pressing the volume down so it mutes.

The volume control only works on PCM soundtracks because Dolby & DTS variants are bitstreams which the receiver has to decode.

I always recommend setting Settings/Audio/Volume direct mode to be switched on - that way you can't accidentally mute it.

Thank you, I turn on: TV > Onkyo > Zidoo.

Disable CEC, as I don't notice any change, I'll keep it that way. Thank you.

I tried different movies with sound in: Dolby Digital, AC-3, DTS, DTS-X... but I continue with picture only. I have indeed set the Volume direct mode.

Hello, the same thing happened to me with the Audio and I solved it with a total reset.

So thinking through logically - you have Audio set to Auto, Volume Direct Mode On and the Zidoo is connected to an Onkyo AVR.

So, say you play an AC-3 movie (or DTS etc etc) movie, the Zidoo has no choice other than to pass a bitstream to the receiver.

So there must be a setting in the receiver that's gone astray - I don't have an Onkyo, but all receivers I've had in the past allow you to select the input individually for video and audio per input - so next thing to look at is whether that's the case.

For example, on the Zidoo input you have the video set as the HDMI assigned to that input but audio is being routed from elsewhere.

  14. For example if the remux file is DV,but I want just hdr10 how do I force it to be HDR and not DV, what setting do I change?

You'd use a custom EDID without DV.

If you want to send me yours I can remove DV:

    To Download EDID
    ================

    Settings/Display/Custom EDID/Save EDID

Save to a USB stick or network location

Post file as attachment to forum

If you just want to do it ad hoc, set HDR to Mapping HDR10 but don't forget to change back afterwards.

  16. Thanks so much, you are the best. Yes I want to be able to switch from it often!! So manually doing it in the settings is best!!

They are crack, but I didn't catch your comment.

I'll tell you how I found out and fixed it; in advance, I apologize for not answering sooner, but I had a bad cold (southern hemisphere = winter = very cold => I caught a cold) and had to stay in bed, which helped me to see things I usually don't see (lift -> wheelchair -> office). While I was lying down, my care came in with her room cleaning set, I watched her sweeping and tidying and in a moment... she takes a duster, a cloth and 'furniture polish', starts cleaning and before I reacted, I see her putting furniture polish on my Onkyo and then wiping hard, moving wheels, pressing buttons etc etc.

I tried to play a music file, which is on the office NAS, and it is displayed on the screen and... nothing! nothing. I tried for a while to find the solution and as I didn't succeed: I applied the old and well known 'reset to factory'. I configured the basics and tried a movie.... Magic, everything is back to normal and it looks and sounds great.

Thanks to all (@Laseriano and @Markswift2003), have a great weekend, which is just around the corner, looming.

  19. When I delete movies from my HDD (when doing so on the z20pro or on pc) I don't get the *deleting file* dialogue, it dissapears, yes, but without feeling like it truly deletes it. Some of these files are big and should take a moment or a small load screen...

My question is, am I truly deleting these movies (. Mkv) or are they just hidden?

    Thanks.

Maybe you should Google what happens when you delete files from a HDD and you will have a better understanding...it doesn't actually spend time overwriting all the data.
