Review: Zidoo NEO Alpha

How much better is the UHD5000?

 

I completely agree, the Neo Alpha is less advanced in terms of its music streaming application than the Eversolo DMP, I've just replaced my A6 with this Neo, internal DAC and power supply excellent, its functions are impressive, I had the opportunity to buy it from someone who wanted to part with it after a few months of use, didn't use the video functions, I got it for half the price when new. As a Roon owner, any minor shortcomings in the software are not a problem. The Neo Alpha is superbly built, a real top-of-the-range model. The review in this thread convinced me that I had to buy it.

 

Like the Zidoo UHD3000, they have a crazy solid build. They are incredible machines. I also use it as an audio streamer with an eaterno DAC and it works great

 

Yes, it's an excellent device for transporting to an external DAC, and it improves sound quality. The person who sold it to me was using the DAC from his Anthem STR preamp, and thought it was good. It's well worth investing in this streamer, which can handle video and music at optimum levels.

 

Hello, when you watch a movie in dolby atmos, how do you set this zidoo to have lpcm audio output?
Can you show me how to set it up?

Any newer versions than this NEO Alpha coming out any time soon? I may pull the trigger on one of these things but I'm concerned Zidoo is about to announce a new line up soon.

Yes, the Neo Alpha has software that's a bit old, I get round the problem for music by using Roon, but for storing and playing films I need to support it. Otherwise, it's a very powerful universal video and music player. I don't know if a replacement will be produced by Zidoo.

 

Does anybody have a problem when installing APKs? Right after installation I have blackscreen and then I can`t even open APKs section - it turns black and then go back to homescreen.

 

Yes I had these problems too, especially when trying tu run an Apple Music apk, It freezes till a black screen comes, the unit doesn't accept any input and have to shut it off.
Sometimes the OLED screen will stay "bright" without showing any picture too.
I found out some bugs here and there, sometimes when I playback a Dolby Vision movie on Posterwall, as soon soon as I push the stop button it freezes to a black screen.
If I leave a movie in pause the Audio output on HDMI sets itself on "off" and have to reactivate it manually from the menu.

 

The NEO Alpha is not available anymore according to resellers (same as NEO S).

Oh crap - Hopefully they will have stock to replace it.

 

Usualy they replace the entire board and don’t waste their time fixing it.
That's why I’m afraid there is no board left.

 

The NEO Alpha I just got looks like a toy concerning the built quality comparing to the UHD 8000 or even 3000.
The lid is thin, shaky and the volume knob is made of plactic (what a shame at this price ).
I' m still waiting for the return of my NEO X

 

Hi!Is there someone who replaced the ssd to 2Tb? What type of ssd working. What I found, only SATA III m2 2280 what is working? But I dont know 2tb or just 1tb max?

 

Hi, do you happen to know if there are any chances to stream Dolby Atmos via HDMI from Tidal from Neo Alpha? I've just discovered UHD8000 can do this. Firmware for Neo is not updated for a long time... And by the way, do you know if it's possible to somehow use 'network standby' in Neo Alpha (e.g. to turn it on from tidal app, like in many other streamers)??
