Yes, you can do that on the DR boxes but not the BPD boxes (at least not discretely).

Instead of using the SDR EDID?

@Markswift2003 is the best person to answer questions on that.

No, @Oldpainless is referring to sending LLDV for SDR content (which for a non-DV display would then need tone mapping in the same way as HDR10) - an SDR EDID is to restrict the Zidoo output to SDR.

What is it you're trying to do?

My goal is to get an image close to what I had with MadVR. Tone mapping was the way to go with MadVR and my Epson 5050, so I assume I should use tone mapping with the Z9X. I just can't get a satisfying HDR image with the Z9X. I tried the SDR EDID and the image looks too bright and washed out.

Coming from running Madvr on a powerful setup, I can say that I have found my pro to be equal to if not better (for most content) when it comes to image quality on an OLED.

Not sure what you are try to do/what the issue is, but, when it comes to a PJ, @Markswift2003 is your man to help you.

@Markswift2003 What's the best way to do tone mapping or do you recommend a different way to set up the Z9X for the best image for my projector?

I played around with the settings while having the SDR EDID activated. When I switch my 5050 into Limited(16-235), the picture looks much better. Does that make sense? Is it the proper thing to do by switching the projector into Limited?

Yes, the limited (16-235) should always be the setting in use when viewing movie content from the Zidoo and other normal video sources anyway.. 0-255 is typically only used when viewing graphics content from a PC. Although FWIW, I do seem to recall a situation when after making some HDR and EDID changes on my Zidoo in the past, that I did seem to have to toggle that setting ... from Auto to 16-235 and then back to Auto in the Zidoo picture settings to "snap" the picture into looking normal again? It is recommended that after making HDR/ and or EDID setting changes in the Zidoo, that you should always do a soft reboot anyway... perhaps this is part of the reason?....

Just to echo @Deano86 says, yes, you always use 16-235. Video content is encoded in limited range, either 16-235 for 8-bit or 64-940 for 10-bit. This option has been removed from the new BPD boxes for this reason.

As for tone mapping - you'll have to make you're own decisions there based on your projector's performance - there are many ways to skin a cat - whether you want to rely on the Zidoo entirely and output an SDR picture, use the projector's native HDR ability or output in LLDV and spoof the PJ to process as HDR.

@Markswift2003 and @Deano86 thank you for explaining. Is there any setting on the Z9X that would allow me to keep my 5050 set to Auto instead of having to switch it to Limited? I'll be using my Shield Pro for streaming services so won't having the 5050 set to Limited screw things up on the Shield? I'm just trying to avoid having to toggle that setting because that's just another thing to confuse my wife. I tried Auto on both the Z9X and 5050 but the colors are washed out.

If you are using the PJ for viewing video content, and not computer graphics, why not set everything (Zidoo/Sheild/PJ) to limited/low ramge?

Limited range is the correct setting for all video content, Shield included.

However, if the Zidoo is set to 16-235 (Limited) then the 5050 should recognise that if set to Auto.

That's weird, it definitely doesn't recognize it because when the 5050 is set to Auto, the colors are dull. As soon as I manually switch it to 16-235, the colors pop and it looks correct.

If that is the case, then you may want to try exactly what I explained in my post. Go into your Zidoo and toggle its Auto/16-235 setting ... this setting shouldn't really be coming into play or be an issue, but you never know. Like I said, I am pretty sure this may have fixed my issue? that I had some time ago... which I suspect only seems to intermittently happen when using custom EDIDs or making HDR setting changes. Not to mention that there should be no issue leaving your projector on 16-235 manually anyway like @Oldpainless stated.

So when I toggle back and forth, do I leave it on Auto or 16-235?

Ok, there might be a language barrier at play, so to be clear, like I, and others have said, now a few times, set the entire chain to 16-235/limited/low.

Oh for gosh sake, put it where it makes things look correct for you and at whatever makes you feel comfortable I guess.... We have stated multiple times now that technically you should just leave it at 16-235. But by toggling it, you are just making sure that the proper output is happening.

Well in this post you say to put it to Auto and others are saying 16-235.

No language barrier and no need to be ignorant about it. In one of @Deano86 responses, he said to toggle back to Auto.
