Another newbie question (are Zidoo really as problematic to set up compared to other NAS servers / Dune systems)? I'm setting up a couple of systems to give as presents and I'm trying to make them exactly as needed out of the box. When I have the box connected via an ethernet cable to the router things are straight forward - I can see the box on a pc and transfer files to the storage device. However, when I switch to the wifi (having unplugged the ethernet cable as it won't be accessible when installed by the tv), the box can see the other devices attached to the router and has internet access, but isn't visible to the pc. I can connect using a browser and configure using the :80 address; I can find the device on the phone app; if using a UPnP device on the pc (i.e. vlc) I can see the device and files, but I just don't seem to be able to see or access it on the network. I'm sure there is something simple I'm missing, or maybe a protocol to install, but so far the penny hasn't dropped. Any suggestions?
Would help to know which boxes (and I'll move the post to the correct forum). I'm assuming they're not old X9S?
Reading the spec sheet must be extremely hard.... If you have a X9s: Type in wifi IP adress into browser. The linux side of the X9s will pop up a login mask. Set a password. Enable ftp server. Log in as username root, password the one that you set, via any ftp client. SMB is also available there. X9S afair is the last of those Zidoo boxes that has an entirely seperate linux side, that ensures it can run as a NAS.
They are old X9S boxes. An additional piece of information is that when using a firestick on another tv, with either Kodi or vlc, I can see them all, but whereas the one connected to the router by cable is fine, those by wifi show the files / folder structure, but the files are shown as 0 bytes and won't play when selected. Looking more closely at vlc, the ethernet connected one is SMB whereas the other UPnP. If I switch the ethernet cable then the other will work, so they are set up the same.
Oh wow, apologies! So I just found an X9S, blew the dust off and plugged it it. Plugged in a USB stick with video files on it and this is accessible from the IP address in Windows both via Wifi and ethernet without me having to configure anything. These boxes use openwrt so have full NAS services which is accessed by the web portal as you've already seen (the new boxes simply have a switchable SMB server). So when accessing the portal on the Wifi IP address, make sure the shares are set up properly in "NAS Services" but I'm certain they're setup correctly by default.
Thanks. I had already got the web / openwrt set up and accessed. Initially I had been trying to use the CEX portal (via Firezilla) as with a Dune but had got transfer fails - when I realised I could just access it via a browser (over ethernet) I switched to that. Just used it in Firezilla without a port and default user / password and can transfer files. Is this the only way to access it using wifi, and is there a way of seeing it on the network like when connected by ethernet? I still have the issue that I can't play files via DNLA from it via a wifi connection (just to be clear, the Zidoo works fine accessing files from other NAS boxes on the system, just not sharing its own) - checking the vlc log it says: access error: HTTP connection failure main error: vlc_credential_get: invalid url main error: connection failed: Connection refused by peer http error: cannot connect to :8200
I tried everything and then saw a post about updating Openwrt. Went from v15 to 19 and that had obvious options I could change - I presume they were there in v15 but needed scripts. Anyway, with v19 everything was running fine in no time at all. Thanks for the pointers along the way.
