Hi there, I am new to this forum and also new to the zidoo crowd. I use a ziddo Z9X through a Denon 7200WA to a Sony VPL-VW590ES native 4K projector. I am looking for the correct (perfect) settings and tweaks to use my Sony VW590ES together with this great media player, Z9X. So far, I am not able to get perfect black levels out of the player. When using 16-235 on both ends, it will not reach down to 64 black levels for HDR (around 100), SDR is fine though. When switching to 0-255, I get completely crashed blacks and whites, everything looks milky, so this is no solutions either. Question would be now, how do I correctly setup my Z9X to display HDR as well as SDR 100% correctly with regards to the black and white levels. Is there a solution with regards to the custom EDID setup or else, that prevents the crushed blacks for HDR material? Source files are mostly MKV's with either HDR10, HDR10+ or DV. Thanks a lot, and have a nice and relaxing weekend everyone!
I use the very latest available through the player. Settings all according to what is recommended by the recommended settings thread like 1:1. I dont manage to get perfect blacks at all, regardless, what I use as settings for HDR in the player. I also used all kinds of different EDID's but I cant get over around 80 as lowest possible black level. Somehow it seems, the player and the projector dont harmonize. I know you are a big fan of the Vertex 2, does this give possibilities to set different black levels for different source materials? Thanks a lot for you help
The Vertex doesn't do any processing so won't help with this. I'm not sure what's happening here - is the HDMI level set correctly in the projector? The last time I tested black level (v6.3.46) I got the following results: HDR>SDR is possibly slightly problematic but in the real world content (seems to be my favourite phrase at the moment!!) it's really not a problem. With HDR (including DV) you also have to take into account that the gamma is following the PQ curve and not a power curve so it comes out of black really slowly and the display has to "decode" that correctly. My projector for example has the worst PQ curve I've ever seen so the only way around it (other than going the SDR route) was to design my own custom gamma curve, upload it and apply with a BT.2020 colour profile for HDR (and LLDV). Point to note with firmware - don't rely on OTA updates - they're unpredictable at best - always use the latest here on the forum.
