"Frame rate pause time" feature doesn't do what I think it's supposed to do

Many video display devices take a bit of time to adjust to a change in incoming resolution or frame rate. (My JVC DLA-NZ8, a great projector otherwise, struggles terribly with this. It makes noises while adjusting, fer crissake!, not to mention taking a 3-5 seconds to adapt.)

I would think the idea behind the "Frame rate pause time" feature is that the Zidoo (mine is a Z10 Pro, by the way) would first change the frame rate and resolution to what's needed for the video you're about to play, then there would be a pause, then the video would start.

After all, that's what you'd want if you want to give your display device some time to cope with a change in the incoming video signal.

As far as I can tell, all I'm getting is a pause before the video starts, and then the video starts a few seconds later, still catching the video display device completely unprepared for the signal change.

Am I missing something? Is it working the way I think it should work, but then still throwing out some different video glitch just before the video starts?

For now I've simply decided to let my Zidoo turn everything into 4K 60Hz to avoid this problem, but I'd rather let my DLA-NZ8 handle frame rate and resolution issues instead.

If HDMI resyncs due to frame rate and/or resolution and/or HDR mode change then the video pauses for the set amount of time allowing the display to resync.

For example, my Samsung takes approx 7s to resync, so if I set this to 7s, the video will start just after the resync has occured.

To see how it works, set the pause to greater than the display sync time and you'll see the video continue to be paused after the resync and resume after the allotted time.

    Tested on a Z9X v6.4.68.

The absolute worst thing you can do is set the Zidoo to output 60Hz for everything.

To minimise resyncs, minimise reasons for the Zidoo to change mode.

    1. Set UI resolution to 4K23
    2. Set Auto Frame Rate to Match Frame Rate Only
    3. Set a static HDR Mode - I use LLDV for everything on my NZ800, even though resync time is dramatically lower than my old X7000

So doing the above I only get a resync if for example I watch 24Hz content rather than the more usual 23Hz.

By the way, the only reason I can think your PJ makes noise when changing mode is because you're changing from a mode without the colour filter (eg Rec.709) to a mode with the colour filter (eg BT.2020 (Wide)). To stop this change the Colour Profile from "Wide" (which engages the filter) to "Normal" (which does not) for HDR content.

Oh, I wasn't happy about that option.

I tried your suggestions, but no joy. Just so you can see the settings...

And this is what I got when I started up a 23.976 Hz 4K copy of The Abyss:

You can hear audio playing even before the screen finally settles down, so I don't think any pause was triggered at all. Maybe it's that my projector throws a fit for any signal change whatsoever, even when frame rate and resolution stay the same, such as SDR to HDR, or from one flavor of HDR to another. Perhaps what I need is a general pause on any signal change, or when any video starts, like pausing on the first frame and then un-pausing after that delay.

I had never even considered that there might be physical optical color filters that get mechanically moved in and out of the way. I just assumed some crazy and senseless change in fan speed was going on.

I seem to have fixed my problem by installing the v6.4.68_G firmware. I'm getting the pauses I need for my projector to get itself synced up and ready to go.

The settings that are working best for me ensure a 7-second delay every time I start a video by setting the interface to 60Hz, which none of my real content uses.

    Excellent!

Yeah, that first video looked like the Frame Pause just wasn't long enough - you hear the sonar echoes after about 5s but the sync finished a couple of seconds afterwards.

As I said before, HDMI will sync on change on any one of, or a combination of, frame rate change, resolution change or HDR mode change.

To make the frame sync less jarring on these projectors I always set the background to black, not blue, and turn off the OSD that appears in the top right when a mode change happens. Makes it feel much smoother.

Another thing to try if you don't want to go down the whole LLDV rabbit hole is set up like this:

    1. Resolution to "4K23"
    2. Auto Frame Rate to "Frame Rate Only"
    3. HDR to "Dolby VS10 Engine (for all content)"

In that way, the resolution will never change, HDR mode will never change and framerate will only change occasionally.

Obviously the caveat is you're using VS10 full time, and converting SDR to HDR with it, so you'll have to decide for yourself if you like this - to me it looks great!

I have the same problem (multiple resynch's & audio starting before video) with a Z9X 8K, but do not see the option for Frame Rate Pause. Did they drop that from the Z9X 8K? (I'm also running the JVC NZ8 Projector). I also have the HDFury Vrroom.

Yes it was dropped on the 8K - I've been trying to get it reinstated but so far no joy.

As I said above, I mitigate the vast majority of resyncs by using LLDV and not upscaling.
