30fps titles are horizontally compressed

I'm wondering if I'm the only one with this issue:

If I play any content that is 30fps (or 29.xx) the aspect ratio is incorrect; the image height is compressed.

The only thing I can do is use the Aspect Ratio option (in the playback menu) to set it at 4:3 ... which unfortunately results in a much smaller image.

Unfortunately for me, many concert videos are at 30fps and I'd love to get the aspect ratio corrected.

What is the container, is it a MKV?
What is the display aspect ratio, when you set it to 4:3?
The original source - file, disc rip etc.

    Definitely MKV.

When I set to 4:3 the aspect ratio is correct, albeit smaller than the screen both vertically and horizontally

This happens with any source file that is 30fps, especially those that are 1080i (surprised that these are still being released) but also 1080p-30fps

Here's a sample Media file report:

I meant to mention that in this case, the correct aspect ration is 2.40:1 but I don't think it's that relevant vs the frame rate

In MKVToolNix you can set the display aspect ratio if you remux it, I think Zidoo respects the tags so it would be worth a try.

Nothing odd in that MediaInfo report - resolution is right, DAR is right.

Can you post a (short) sample.

I don't have any 30fps clips to hand but I have some 29.97fps 1920x1080i clips (from concerts) and they all play full screen as expected.

When you say the image height is compressed, what do you mean - 16:9 image compressed to 2.40:1 or something like that?

    I'll try editing the tags.

@Markswift2003 the problem occurs with all 29.97fps as far as I can tell. I'm going to collect a bit more data and reply again.

    Thanks for the replies!

The fact it occurs with all your files is odd. Don't think it's tag issue - DAR is correct and to be fair that would only come into play for anamorphic content which we just don't see/need since the advent of HD.

I think you're right. Weird thing is that I when I start playing a title, I often see a flash with the proper AR - then, almost like a re-sync the screen goes black for a second and it appears with the squished aspect ratio.

My signal chain is the Zidoo into a Marantz AV10, then into a Lumagen video processor and then my projector. The Lumagen reports the proper frame rate but as it doesn't support 30fps it changes to 60fps. I did wonder if this chain was responsible but I'm able to play the same content on disc via a bluray player (other than the source - the same chain) and it plays fine but I can't recall if my player is outputting 60fps or 30fps in this case - I'll have to check.

Lumagen would be my prime suspect for actually changing the aspect ratio, but as for why, I have no idea. Process of elimitation to find the culprit I think...

Bypassed the Lumagen and all was fine. Thank you for your help. I've tracked down the setting in the Lumagen and actually solved my issue. I'm thrilled....!
