There are specialist data recovery companies that might be able to help you. The soldering would require a professional solder station with good temperature control and possibly silver solder. Best do some deep research. Good luck. A sadly deceased friend use to do this for work in forensics including the transferring the plates to a mechanically working unit. He worked in an atmosphere controlled environment !

Thank you - I will have 99% of the Data backed up - Just so annoying - I could really use the extra storage without having to shell out another £270 - I'll have orderd a replacement as I need the storage, just hoping I get the other back into service too. I'd quit happily fix it permanently to a cable or an adapter if I can get it working. Time to think on it. Not sure if there are places that could fix it. Cheers

Sorry - I hate to correct, but it's better to get the correct info - you most definitely wouldn't use silver solder for this - it melts at much higher temperatures than standard electronics (tin & lead) solder and is generally used for jewellery work and braising.

Also, it's no big deal - as long as the connections from the pins to the board are still intact, anyone with a bit of soldering experience and a decent station could do it - any repair shop. Hell - I could do it here in a heartbeat (after a bit of tidying up):

Not trying to be clever, but I don't want you to think it's a bigger job than it is.

If it was me, I'd cut the data connector off this header:

solder that to the existing pins and fix it with a dollop of hot glue. Wouldn't be the prettiest, but it'd work (as I say, as long as the board connections are intact).

Well it depends on what background experience Dr Photo has, not for someone with little soldering experience. BTW your workstation looks not unlike mine, but from a previous generation!

Cheers - It looks doable if you have the right gear & a bit of experience. I'm going away for a few days & will look at in detail when I get back.

Just need to make sure it's done right first time.

Thanks for the support & encouragement - Appreciated

How doable is replacing the whole connector block? Is it worth considering? Just a thought - TIA

Well yes it is doable - the boards are usually easy to remove but the problem is the connectors are bespoke to the drive board and you'd ideally need an SMD (surface mount device) rework station (a glorified hot air gun) to do it.

I'd definitely go down the bodge it and scarper route with a piggy backed connector and a hot glue gun ;)

That is sounding a better option by far - the ebay link is in my watch list - I just need to think of a customer who might do this sort of work and come to an arrangement. I must know someone. It does seem a sensible and doable solution. hanks

Finally an update. First of all many thanks for all the help. The machine is working fine and having glued the broken bit onto the old 1otb drive and straightened the pins out I have it working in a caddy. Most helpful. The Zidoo is recognising the hard drive on the pc and plays the videos fine over the network.

I now, due to upgrading a drive in the PC, have a spare WD 3tb drive available. I was thinking of adding this into the Zidoo. I therefore have another question :)

If I format the drive in a USB caddy & copy over the already recognisd folder on the pc to the spare drive. Will it just pop in the Zidoo and be recognised? I ask as I am waiting for an extra caddy coming - I'm not moving the 1otb one again. That is staying put.

I thought I would ask before I put 2.7 tb of video on it and find out it is the wrong procedure.

Once again thanks for all the support, all things are slowly coming together.

    Cheers

Brilliant! Really glad you got it working.

Not entirely sure what you mean with the second drive, but if I understand you right then no it won't work since drive letters/allocations will be different. However, you could just add it as a source and rescan.

Apologies for the lack of clarity. I have a 3tb that I want to put inside the Zidoo. I have read assorted threads about problems with formatting. My unknown is whether you have to put an empty formatted drive and add the data, or whether I can just format the drive, and add the folder of data to the new drive and put this in the Zidoo full of data.

I have the caddy on order but thought I would check with the hive mind whilst I await its arrival. TIA

I put a 2TB drive in my caddy and formatted in my PC as NTFS with GPT selected. I then copied a number of video files in their own folders onto it before I then inserted it into my Zidoo UHD 3000. Works well but it's only temporary until I get a 10TB shortly.

Excellent - Just what I wanted to know. Thank you - Putting 2.7 tb on the disc and then finding I had gone the wrong route would have been a great disappointment lol
