SACD playback from Oppo 103

I'm trying to play SACD DSD from an Oppo 103 via an HDMI extractor device with DOP output via S/PDIF coax to DMP-A6 coax input.

The DMP-A6 shows a DSD-64 signal , but the issue is severe crackling and popping during playback via analog out to integrated amp.

When I switch the Oppo's output to SACD-PCM, there is no such noise.

+ Is this a compatibility issue with the DAC's ESS chipset?
+ Or, a defective HDMI extractor?

    Thanks for your replies.

    -Ross

EDIT: I've tried multiple XLR, RCA, coax cables and the problem persists. I've also tried multiple DSD64 DOP sources and the problem remains. I also get the noise but to a lesser extent when streaming ripped DSD files from Roon via the DMP-A6 internal player. Resetting the DMP-A6 did not remedy the issue either.

Can the spdif coax handle the bandwidth required for DSD64?

It's a Monoprice 102681, 3 ft. Not seeing any specs specific to DSD other than 76 Ohm impedance.

Have you tried playing a DSD file (DSF or DST) natively on the A6?
A simple USB stick will do to try playing internally.

If that works fine, then it is your digital connection to the A6 that is problematic.

So I’ve still got that crunchy sound when playing SACD / DSD (DOP64). SACD / PCM sounds fine but sample rate is 88.2 maximum.

Yes, DSD files from Roon and also USB device play fine (I went up to DSD256).

    What I tried:
+I replaced the HDMI (DOP) extractor with a new one. No change. Added 12v power adapter to extractor. No change.

+ Replaced HDMI cables with new. No change.

+ Replaced SPDIF Coax cable with new Mogami 75ohm. No change.

+ Tried a Sony UBP-X800M2 blu-ray player but same crunchy sound occurred when set to DSD output. (Sounded fine on PCM).

+ Applied every possible combination of settings.

Again, the A6 will play at SACD > DSD64 DOP but has popping and crackling throughout playback. SACD > PCM is fine but limited to 88.2.

That is what I'm experiencing in DSD mode from the A6 to the OPPO 205 and my conclusion is that OPPO is not very stable on the HDMI IN in Audio mode with the A6.
    DOP64 was working fine though.

Mmh, that's complete different, because here in this thread the DMP-A6 is used as DAC and a HDMI extractor is in the chain.

I'm using (very rare) an Oppo 105 with a HDMI extractor (https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/hdmi...l-to-i2s-coaxial-optical-4k-60hz-p-13419.html) together with my Holo Audio May through I2S without any problems.

Different in here is, that no DoP is used and it goes through I2S.

    What I would do:
    - test another HDMI audio extractor
    - test it with another "DoP source" like a PC with SPDIF out (or a Mac, which outputs DSD in every case as DoP)
    - rip your SACDs (the Oppo 103 is able to do this) and include the file into your Roon system

I have an Oppo 103 that's used exclusively for ripping SACDs. I have a large portion of my SACDs (stereo and multichannel) ripped with the files on hard drives. My DMP-A6 has an internal 4TB SSD installed and a connected 5TB USB hard drive.

I can play all of my SACD rips with the DMP-A6 which is one of the biggest reasons for buying one. I use the HDMI output (to an Emotiva XMC-1) for multichannel and the USB output (to a Marantz SA-KI Ruby). The DMP-A6 is an excellent hub for all of this so I have no need to play the SACDs anymore. No need for an HDMI extractor or the additional cabling.

Same use case here -- albeit to a OPPO 205 for multi-ch and a Pontus II for stereo.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only only using the DMP-A6 purely as a digital server/streamer!

Did you ever resolve this? I have the exact same issue.

I did not get my eBay DOP extractor (I2s to digital coax) to function without the crackling sound, which I think is due to lack of EMI shielding. I started making an enclosure using layers of copper tape inside a NEMA waterproof case to surround the existing enclosure but got annoyed and just bought the Oppomod I2S card and connected to my PS Audio DirectStream Mk1, which has (2x) I2S inputs.

In fact, I'm mostly using my Eversolo as a Roon streamer, with the PS Audio performing DAC duty. A great combo, in my opinion.

The DMP-A6 does not have I2S input, if I remember correctly. You may want to experiment with DOP extractor device location, using longer cables and/or some kind of EMI shielding.

Well it sounds like the HDMI extractor was the issue all along. Not sure if others are having the same issues you were having or if they are having success with different extractors.

As I posted earlier the issues of using an extractor to play SACDs is alleviated due to ripping my SACDs. I can not say enough how well it has worked out. The ability to just pickup my phone and play any album or song from many ripped SACD, CD, DVD-A and Blu-ray Audio discs is well worth the effort and time. Just last night I was playing music in my bedroom system. I was able to play music as it popped into my head without having to get out of my chair to go downstairs to search the media closet for the music.

Yes, I've also ripped my SACDs and they sound great.

However, I am stubborn and just wanted the Oppo to output DSD. And I like my guests having the ability to play CDs, since they are unlikely to understand Roon.

    That's great!
Totally understand that. I tried Roon for less than a month and gave up. It's too complex for my needs which is just playing files from USB hard drives and streaming Qobuz. Add to that the need to have a laptop, tablet or other device to utilize Roon. The monthly subscription or one time payment fee was not something I wanted to do.

The DMP-A6 (main system) and a WiiM Ultra (bedroom system) make playing files from USB hard drives or streaming Qobuz so easy.

The issue for DoP is in the ESS settings for the DPLL bandwidth in DSD mode. It's a well known flaw. The default DPLL BW bandwidth setting for DSD inside the chip is too sensitive and needs to be set to the less sensitive setting (15), or be allowed to be user configurable. Either can be easily done through a firmware update.

Other manufacturers such Topping, SMSL, Benchmark, etc. implemented the options to change the DPLL bandwidth very quickly because it is the simplest fix imaginable, but no amount of emailing Eversolo over the last 11 months on the matter has been fruitful.

The closest I've got to a response from them has been, "Personally I think the priority of this suggestion might not be very high." Absolutely blows one's mind.

Perhaps if others raised this issue with them they would be more responsive. Good luck.

OMG, thank you for this, the correct answer at last.

Time to send Eversolo some hate-mail. I’m in the return-window for the A6 so if they’re not fixing it, it’s going back for a different option.

So after a bit of back an forth in which I did reference the fact that they'd communicated with others about this issue and sent them video illustrating the problem in my own system, I received the following response from Eversolo:

    "Hi Ravi,

We are going to release a version soon that allows DPLL bandwidth tuning.

    Stay tuned.
    Thank you."

With the attached image. Maybe a little critical-mass in customer feedback is all that's needed sometimes. Regardless, encouraging news for a device I'm otherwise quite pleased with.
