It is not easy to establish exactly what is possible with the current firmware regarding the DSP/EQ functionality of the DMP-A8 and whether that can be used with the digital outputs of the unit. Based on threads here it appears that the situation has changed over time, DSP may not be the same as EQ functionality, and there may also be differences between which digital outputs are available (Coax/Opt vs USB). I am considering purchasing an DMP-A8 partly to use the EQ functionality with the internal audio player, with the hope of outputting that over USB to a Schitt Yggdrasil DAC. I could use the coaxial output from the DMP-A8 to do this as an alternative but USB is preferred. Can anyone here let me know if internal player -> EQ -> USB output is possible with the A8? Or failing that is internal player -> EQ -> Coax available? Thanks in advance
USB out does not allow for PEQ but COAX should give you access to EQ / PEQ. I would send an email to service@eversolo.com with the specifics. I mostly only use XLR out which gives me access to all DSP / FIR filters.
PEQ configurations are fully functional across all of the digital outputs of my A8 which is used exclusively as a digital transport, serving both solid state and tube DACs of all types. While I do not use optical for anything, it too is fully functional when PEQ is applied.
I just noticed about a week ago - any digital output SPIDIF (optical or cable) will NOT use DSP. Confirmed Only works now with RCA or XLR Something is broken
Just confirmed - DSP (and RC) are not enabled for digital output. They once were. I know because I used it that way and heard cause and effect. My wife heard it too while I used the app to demo it. After the most recent upgrade - no longer works. Support would not admit they removed it - but they said it will not work for digital out. That is not an answer to my question, which was, why was it taken out. Then curiously - they said, DSP and PEQ DO work in digital out in our Flagship DMP A-10. BINGO! That is the reason right there. At least service does respond - but - -follow the thread - notice how they say it always did not support digital, just it does not. That allows too much wiggle room IMO, and my question was very direct and specific. I would have never bought this thing if they were playing fast and loose with features - and I do not enjoy being gaslit Hey - maybe I just hallucinated it all that time - but - no - when my wife could hear the room correction on/off, that was through OPTICAL out. Full stop. Thread with service here From Service - response Hi Mark, Thanks for fast response and I am happy that you love the DMP-A8. Our flagship DMP-A10 supports the DSP when using optical. However it isn't supported by DMP-A8, only work for analogue outputs as you mentioned. To Service - complaint Thank you for responding I have had the A-8 for nearly a year - I love it I used manual room correction with REW and it worked great via your FIR filter I saw the built in room correction and its even better! The problem is, I had heard cause and effect changes with DSP - using OPTICAL for over a year. We cant say it never worked. I would like to know what changed and why - as I may as well sell this thing off I certainly cant be the only one You are basically saying - DSP and RC ONLY drive analogue outputs... That is not what I bought, nor is it what I enjoyed Thank you!
To be fair - the manual does state that DSP ONLY outputs analogue - but - I never read that, and it did work! And who would buy something like this to only have analogue output for the very thing you buy it for ? My guess is the firmware had it, then as the A-10 came online, someone noticed and quietly took it out.
Mark, it has always been the case that the DSP function in the A8 is integrated with the dac chip, so DSP is only effective for signals that pass through the dac/dsp chips which give analog output (XLR and RCA). This is well documented here and elsewhere. For the digital outputs (that do not pass through the dac/dsp chips), you can easily add PEQ values for room correction, etc. The A10 uses different chips and circuitry for a different outcome. No skullduggery here. Hope this helps. Bill
Thank you. I do understand that logic - but - using Internal player with output as Optical 1, you can select DSP and toggle buttons on and off, but if you listen - just try changing DSP gain - it does not work, but, I know for a fact it once did - last month or so.
Oh no! I'm still on board - just bitching a bit... I had to run a pair of XLR out next to the optical so I could get it back. My setup is a bit "nuanced" - I use the A8 in my office on my desk, pulling in Roon from my PC, powering a set of Klipsch "9's" in the office. But when I really want to experience the music I move to the living room right next door with Roon Remote on my phone and then have Cornwall IV's. That was the run that had optical to the pre-amp / amp. Nice try though ;-)
The previous comments have raised an issue for me then. I have an A8 connected to an Audiolab M-Dac+ using usb connection and I am able to use DSP & PEQ. I have tried both optical and coax connections and again both can be used! Glitch somewhere? If when listening I click on cast, from my iPad I click on eq settings and the relevant controls appear, I can adjust individually, select preset from the various blues, classical, pop etc and they definitely work. Comments would be welcome as to why this happens, because I would have thought using an external DAC the signal from the A8 would bypass PEQ etc?
I know what I heard, and after doing RC, my wife heard it as I toggled it on and off. While OPTICAL output. Source was internal player. Its not a Mandela effect. So - I just switched to XLR out - while putting this contradiction behind me. If I could downgrade to roughly December vintage firmware - I could prove it. Just do not know how, nor do I have the time
Glad to hear this works for you. I'm about to purchase an external DAC so wanted confirmation that DSP and EQ work in USB output. I assume they're not just options that don't actually work? Thanks, Fred
Fred, DSP is a function of the DSP chip, which has never been used on the A8's digital outputs. Please read the manual. The A10 has a different design, and may work better for you.
