Can Jellyfin accomplish my needs?

Discussion in 'Jellyfin for Zidoo' started by Nicholas Degenhart, Apr 23, 2025.

  1. Hey everybody

I have used various Zidoo players over the last 5 years. I have stayed with the HT throughout because it works well enough. I have a Synology NAS with a 10GbE port.

I am about to get fiber internet with 5Gbps uplink. I plan to place a new Zidoo 8K player at my other house (also multi-gig down/up fiber) and I would like to allow access to my movies/tv shows.

I am hoping that Jellyfin would work? I have many BDMV and ISO (as well as MKV) so Plex is a no go.

Never used Jellyfin so any advice as to what it can/can't do would be great! Thanks in advance

Tailspin is something I keep seeing that various setups are also using. Thoughts?

    Hi, Nicholas.
    Yes, it will absolutely work.
I also have a Synology NAS with a Jellyfin server, and I can access my content from my laptop and phone Jellyfin clients easily.
I could never quite master remote access to the Jellyfin (or Emby, or Plex) server until I started using Tailscale.
Tailscale is pretty straight forward to set up, but needs to be installed on all the devices that will be talking to each other. It's also a great way to share content with family and friends, if you're so inclined.

  3. Awesome! I should have monitored my own question more closely. I forgot to check the forums until just now and in the past couple days I basically came to the same conclusion (to use Tailscale).

How does Transcoding work on the Jellyfin? Can I turn that "feature" off completely and only transfer the raw data file? Since I will have matching Zidoo's on both ends of these networks I want to make sure I am getting the full Remux and nothing is being touched when it goes through the Jellyfin server.

    Honestly, I'm not too sure.
I haven't looked at, or changed transcoding settings.
I generally only remote-access low bitrate content. The few times I've tried high bitrate stuff (4K), it's been a buffering nightmare. Whether this is due to crappy bandwidth, or the gutless processing power of my old-ish NAS, I couldn't tell you. :D

  5. Gotcha - I am getting a 5Gbps Fiber line so I don't think bandwidth is going to be an issue for me. We will see once it's installed. Thanks for your input

Yes, you can disable the transcoding completely. Zidoo players work best when reading the source file directly and not the stream from the Jellyfin server. 8K series of players have Jellyfin client build in with direct path to the network files. Older Zidoo players will need to work with Jellyfin Android generic client and relay on the server stream. Not much horse power or bandwidth needed for UHD remux files. ISO could be a challenge with Jellyfin.

  7. thanks for the added info. I am waiting on my 8K player from Zidoo. Hopefully here in the next few days.
