So with Handbrake supporting keeping the Dolby Vision metadata on encodes (version 8 i think), i've decided to start digging in to how to get the best picture out of my setup. I'm already using the settings recommended in the "Recommended Settings and Other Useful Stuff", but now that i have access to DV on my MKV encodes, is there any settings i need to change to get the best picture. I'm trying to avoid buying any more hardware than what i have to keep the path as simple as possible. My path is basically the Zidoo Z9X --> Anthem AVM70 --> Epson 5050UB. I'd be willing to purchase a HDFury, but that's about it.

Some things I have changed is to set the HDR setting from Auto to VS10 for HDR and DV. Other than that, I haven't changed anything else (custom EDID, etc).

I'm hesitant to use a custom EDID on the Epson because I also have a NVidia Shield going to the Epson as well so I don't want to make a change to the projector for the Zidoo that will be incompatible with the Shield. I don't use the Shield much, except for the occasional family streaming session, but I don't want to have to mess with projector settings when I do use it. I'd be willing to make a change however that is compatible with both sources even if it prioritizes the Zidoo.

I know the information I seek is in this thread, but there is soooo much information. If your response is just a bunch of links to other posts, i'd be totally fine with that...I don't mind reading, it's the getting lost in the sauce that i have a hard time with. If that is what i have to do though, that's what i'll do. It will just take me with my adhd a VERY long time to make sense of it all.

thank you in advance for guiding and making it simple for me.

If you want to use DV on the Epson, you'll have to use a custom EDID - there's no other way.

However, if you load a custom EDID into the Zidoo that will not affect your Shield.

The easiest way is to load the included LLDV EDID into the Zidoo but I'm not sure whether or not the Epson supports manually switching to HDR10 mode - if it doesn't you'll need an HDFury device - ideally a Vertex 2.

See attached PDFs for both eventualities.

His Epson will indeed allow manual switching to HDR mode...so he should be able try out LLDV on the Zidoo and see how it works for him.

So tried out LLDV and basically, i get a black screen going from the Zidoo to the AVM70 to the projector. Connecting the Zidoo to the projector directly does work and i'm able to get Dolby Vision. Oddly enough, the picture looks the same as when i set the Zidoo to use the VS10 engine for HDR and DV. In the case of the latter however, i'm able to pass the video through my AVM and get the Dolby Vision badge to show up.

So for right now, i think i'll just go that route since it doesn't require me to upgrade cables or try to figure out why i'm getting a black screen going through the AVM which should just be passing the video untouched. I'd probably work through it if i saw more of a difference in PQ between LLDV and setting the VS10 engine to be used for HD/DV. In a totally dark room, the picture quality looks the same.
