I've reconfigured my Samba server to export anything that Zidoo has access to as read-only after reading this. Better safe, than shocked.

i've had this issue with the R_volution 8k i had for a few weeks. i had a system hang, then on the reboot, 4 movies were gone in the folder i was before the hang. From this day i set my SMB share settings to read only.

 

I lost 1TB this way.
Wasnt sure if it was my ssd disks since i run 3 in raid 0 but nothing gone since i changed to read only.

 

I know I asked before, but can you clarify if it was local HD, USB, NAS, DAS or SMB?

 

So a NAS?

Just trying to narrow down the protocal - possibly related to ethernet, rather than USB or intenal HD?

My DAS is USB, and never seen that issue.

So is there a way to tell zidoo to use them as read-only and not be able to write to them?
From what I understand, by default it can touch them.

 

I need to check to make sure, but I think under smb it has a choice of write or not write.

 

mine was also an ssd. one month old 4tb now blank and dead.

 

Just catching up on this - so you had an SSD connected to the Zidoo with content on it and suddenly that content was no longer there?

Any idea as to what precipitated it?

When you say "dead" what do you mean?

 

I will start by saying I do not know if the drive being dead (not showing up on any computer or the Zidoo) is connected to the Zidoo unit situation or just a coincidence.

Several times while watching a show from a folder containing several copies of a TV series using downloaded subs, on an SSD connected via the hard drive bay to the Zidoo, the display has gone blank in the middle of watching it.

When I go back into the folder, the file I was watching is then gone with no trace, but the rest of the drive's content is still there.

I pulled the drive and connected it to a computer and the drive failed to show up at all. Put it back in the Zidoo, and now the drive no longer shows up there either. SanDisk has issued an RMA for the one-month-old drive. (P.S. SanDisk is a demon to deal with. The drive was bought from Western Digital, but those are now handled by SanDisk) I will never buy another SanDisk product again. Although their chat agents were all excellent.

 

I don't want to pre-judge any drains up on this, but, some time ago I bought a DAS (4 bay), and I had a hard drive fail - I put it down to the controller on the DAS. I then bought another HD and put it the DAS, and in over 3 years, no issues at all (60tb)- upon a google, it turned out the HD that failed was known to fail (unknown to me at the time).

Sometimes a bad HD/SSD just goes bad.

Now I only buy HD's that are up to datacentre specs - for normal use, you're good.

 

All my other drives ARE data center drives. The SSD that failed was a WD red. I don't know of consumer grade data center type SSD's.

 

I am starting to think I hear of more SSDs that fail than standard HDDs... My brand new work laptop with an SSD failed within a month..

 

So far, knock on wood, my "high-end" SSD's have been ok, but the "cheaper" ones are crap. If you consider over $300 for 4TB "cheap".

 

Ok, I recreated it. Using an SSD connected via USB to my computer and using SMB to watch a vid, part of a series in a folder I downloaded the subtitle using the Zidoo and then hit the "back" button and the entire contents of the folder deleted.

 

Nobody assures you the quality for the price. I'd to replace my SanDisk Extreme SSD 2TB after one month of use (crashed - no recovery) and then no issues after 2 years of daily use.

So it is trying to auto-delete downloaded subtitles, but instead deletes the entire directory?

If so, then that is right up there in terms of severity. The kind of scenario where you'd expect a scramble to release a fix ASAP. Like next day or sooner!
