Slow SMB transfer speed between NAS and internal HDD in Zidoo 3000 pro

Hi, I have encountered a following issue

1. Mounted 12 TB WD Red Plus hard drive inside Zidoo z3000 Pro
2. Formatted it into NTFS as per recommendation in FAQ thread
3. Enabled Samba server in settings in order to copy files from NAS to HDD inside Zidoo

I get extremely low speeds!
Tried over wi-fi - it's 12.5 Mb/s on average (same operation copying from NAS to PC is about 5 times faster)
Tried over cabled connection - it's 28 Mb/s on average (again NAS to PC is close to full saturation of gigabit connection)

What's going on? Tried every setting imaginable
It's absolutely unusable this way

So the PBC has been modified, but the question is simple: Why is the transfer speed too low with this new SoC?

Furthermore, the transfer speed between the UHD8000 internal bays shows the same problem.

 

Of course the PCB hasn't been modified!! They're two different boards - one is from an x96 TV Minibox and clones and the other is a Zidoo Z8X 8K.

How to do that?

Must admit I haven't tried (I haven't even got hard discs in it), but I don't think the box reports transfer speed when copying files across.

 

If you copy a movie between the internal bays using the Zidoo Mediacenter, it will report the transfer speed.

 

How slow? I have had a Z1000Pro and now have a UHD8000 - using Windows I rarely have had speeds > 70mbps. Yes you may say slow perhaps but it's been consistent and never ever have had a transfer issue. At this speed, I'm perfectly ok. I never transfer between the UHD8000's 2 HDDs always via my PC, in a room quite a distance away and ALWAYS via Ethernet to and from any of my devices

That's probably about right for a gigabit network - with network overhead, error checking and variations between network cards blah blah blah, you can get anything between say 30 and 80MB/s. If you get 60MB/s or above you're doing ok (remember, these are bytes, not bits).

You also have to bear in mind that when copying from a network location using a PC, even if the network location is physically the same box, you're copying through the PC so the data is first copied to the PC and then back out again involving write/read file operations and double network traffic on the PC network card and any switches involved.

In a managed environment and the right tools it's possible to perform a direct server-side copy but not without much cleverness

I did a couple of checks yesterday from my PC and copying a 4.7GB file direct from a PC hard drive to a hard drive in a UHD8000 transferred at 89GB/s.

Out of interest, this is over maybe 60M of CatV and through 3 managed switches.

I also had results of 65MB/s for a different hard disc in the UHD8000 demonstrating that hardware matters.

Both discs were 1TB Samsungs I had knocking about in my lab, manufactured 16 years ago (holy crap, wasn't 2008 about 5 years ago???).

Transferring the same file from a network location to PC was at 65MB/s.
Transferring from the same network location to the UHD8000 via the PC was at 54MB/s.

The last one involved over 120M of CatV travelling through 4 switches, three of them bidrectionally, and of course write/read operations in the PC.

I have several WD NAS drives, some old and some newer. Using the same PC to transfer files from PC to NAS box shows a significant difference in transfer rates - older ones at say 30-40MB/s and newer ones at 50-60MB/s.

But this is why I rarely chip in on network speed conversations - because the variation in hardware and network environments is vast so someone just saying that the network speed is crap is utterly meaningless. Not saying it can't be improved, maybe it can, but the issue most probably isn't endemic to the Zidoo box.

just bought a new tp-link be800 wifi 7 2x2.5gb 1x10gb port and same problem as the old router... 12 mbps write speed to the z3000

rebuilding my server with new parts tomorrow. se if i get more speed form there.


just for fun i can try to change the hdd in the z3000 to. will report back tommorow.

 

I know that with my Zidoo UHD 3000 I always had a write speed of around 100 MB/s on the internal hard drive, here is proof from the year 2022 and 2021:

and even quite stable. With the Z9X 8k, the speed fluctuates permanently between 70 - 90 MB/s. The cable network looks like this: PC/SSD -> 10G -> Switch -> 2.5G -> WiFi Router -> 1G -> Zidoo->USB->SSD or NAS(8xRaid5) -> 10G -> Switch -> 2.5G -> WiFi Router -> 1G -> Zidoo->USB->SSD
I can live with this speed, after all I only need to transfer something from time to time. Could be at the level of Realtek devices, but maybe that will come. From my point of view, it's just the AML SoC problem. It's similar with the Dune 8K, but it fluctuates more, between 60 - 100 MB/s.

 

Hello, havent had a chance to test it again on a new firmware.
Anyway I found that 12 tb HDD is so extremely loud with it's hum vibrating noise that it is a completely no-go being in a player that's in a living room

Sad to find out that HDD bay in Zidoo z3000pro has no vibration isolating pads or sound dampening at all.

 

Hello everyone, tried it again and no luck, very slow

Tried to put my HDD to PC - formatted it again to NTFS for good measure
Now copying from Synology to this drive mounted to PC yields me 150 mb/s speed over wi-fi

And to my surprise the HDD is VERY quiet, can't hear it all, especially as it is now in an opened PC case

How is your experience with 7200rpm disks in zidoo? Is it loud for you? Does it always spin at max rpm?
