Hi Paul, Once again many thanks for your continued support. I went to bed last night feeling lost as I thought I hd done everything possible but when I saw your post this morning (I am in the UK) I once again was spurred into action. I thought it was odd that I had lost access because I hadn't changed any settings. All I had done was related to my apps, getting them configured and making taskbar shortcuts. I decided to check all the settings that I had changed under your and Marks guidance and all were as expected. I then decided to reread the whole of this thread and came across a post by Akeela and I realised that I hadn't done steps 5/6/7. That brought Samba back to me. I just don't know why it worked for a time yesterday but was then was lost. And I don't understand why the one change I made today has brought it back but I hadn't made that change yesterday but still got access. It's all very weird to me. Anyway it's all great at the moment. I am a great believer in disc imaging as a solution to putting the PC back to a previous good state and kick myself for not taking one yesterday but I was waiting until I had got my apps sorted. That was a bad mistake. Today I have made an image with Samba working and made a copy of that image just in case. I am a happy bunny once again, and, once again thank you for pushing me forward! I was starting to lose hope
On my Win8 machine all I had to do was enable Share-Samba in the Zidoo settings and it showed up in Explorer. No putting in of anything at all, jut one click in the settings. This has been a nightmare because the whole reason I had this PC built was to use with Zidoo. Anyway I am very happy at the moment as it has worked all day and I am taking regular disc images as I progress with setting the PC up. I did a test resore of one of the images and that worked perfectly and so I am pretty confident things will work out. Tonight I am going to test tha Zidoo and see if the updates, of which there were many, have done their job. I reckon they will have from what the changelog said. Thanks again Paul and Mark for getting me over the line. I was ready to throw the towel in!
Don't forget to set the IP address of your Zidoo devices as a static IP address in both the Zidoo network settings and on your home router. If not already done so. Good Luck PM
Hi Paul, When I reached out to the builders of my PC I asked them to change the IP addresses which he did by remote access. However, althouh the PC showed us as connected there was no internet access and we coulddn't restore it until the IP address was put back. I will certainly have another try if you feel it may be beneficial but I am not sure how I would change on both PC and Zidoo. Would you be so kind as to give me some instructions? I do know that the Zidoo can chage it's IP address and that could be inconvenient if accessing from File Explorer. However what I have done is access all the drives in, and connected to, the Zidoo by opening Share_Samba. I have then made shortcuts to each drive(because I couldn't change the drive IDs) and renamed the shortcuts to indicat which drive I am accessing. I keep all these shortcuts in a folder on my deskttop and can now access the drive I want just by clicking on its shortcut without having to open Explorer and without putting in the IP address or password. In the attachment you will see the 8 drives I have connected to Zidoo (2 internal,4 in a hub, and two external drives.) This method has worked flawlessly on my Win 8 PC for about 12 months and if the Zidoo did change IP address it didn't impact my access. So, I am wondering if the method I use is preventing any issues, even if Zidoo changes IP address, or if the Win8 PC just copes seamlessly with Zidoo chnging it's IP address. Regardless I am keen to follow your advice as you have got me this far and I trust that what you are telling me wll possibly help me to avoid issues down the line. Best regards, Alex.
In your Zidoo under networking if you assigned an IP address of your choosing did you make sure to turn off DHCP at the top of the screen (auto) see my setting. I chose an IP address in the high range ending in 218. In my router I set that same address as a fixed address. I can turn off the entire system and when it comes back everything is the same. In my router I’ve also turned off dhcp for addresses below .200. All devices above. .200 have fixed addresses. Saves a lot a chasing and headaches
Hi, Thanks for the info. Do I just have to change the IP address in the Zidoo or is there something I need to do on the PC? When things were done last time I didn't do it, the tech guy did it by remote access and, as far as I am aware, he changes stuff on the PC. I don't think he even accesssed the Zidoo menu.
Well if dhcp in the Zidoo is not turned off as in my image then that’s how the ip address in the zidoo could change. They all have to match sobthe ip address in the Zidoo is the same in your pc and router. If any changes for whatever reason that’s why you are having problems. Why don’t you inspect for yourself the Zidoo and take a note of the settings. If DHCP at the top is on, turn it off.
Once again many thanks for your help. I have turned that setting to off and so the Zidoo should now have a static IP.
Hi, Since my initial problems where I just couldn't access Zidoo from my new PC that issue has been totally resolved and I can now access all the drives that are associated with it. However when I transfer a file from any of the 3 SSDs on my PC to any of the dives linked to the Zidoo, including either of its two internal 24Tb Seagate Exos Enterprise HDDs I am getting really slow speeds of between 13 and 15mbps. If I move stuff between the SSDs then I will get between 400 and 550mbps. Of course I realise that I can't expect anything approaching the SSD speeds but maxing out at 15 tells me there is a problem but I just can't find out what that is. I wonder if anyone has any idea what I need to change to get the speed up. I did access my router settings and under the advanced tag /applications/remote storage/ there was a section headed Samba . Just underneath was a button that was set to Disable. I set that to Enable but it didn't make any difference. Underneath that button was one showing LAN Enabled and one showing WAN as disabled. I left those alone. Does anyone know how these should be set? I am using my Zidoo wirelessly as I have found on my PC at least I get better speeds than ethernet but could wire up the Zidoo if necessary. Thanks for reading.
Hi, I have just noticed that my Zidoo 8000 is displaying an incorrect date and time. I have visited settings to try and alter this but couldn't find any way to do that. I did try setting a different time zone and then going back to the one I want but with no luck. Can anyone tell me how I might get the correct date and time back?
There's your problem. Wireless is not a good choice. Use wired Ethernet with good cabling that can support Gigabit speeds.
Hi, Many thanks for the input. I have now connected the Zidoo with a Cat8 cable and my speeds have doubled from the max of 15Mb/s to around 30Mb/s. By the way I only went with the Cat8 because it was a freebie from Amazon as I am on their Vine Voice Reviewers panel and receive free products for review. Otherwise I would probably have bought Cat6. Obviously I am happier than I was but still, 30Mb/s from an SSD in a PC with a Intel Core i9 14900 KF processor to a 24Tb Seagate Exos Enterprise HDD seems a bit mean. I was expecting transfer speeds in excess of 100Mb/s. Do you think my expectations were realistic or am I missing something?
I'd expect double or even triple of what you see now. If you are on a properly configured GigE network, all your cabling is good and there isn't some other device hogging all the bandwidth, you should see transfer speeds anywhere between 60 MB/s to 110 MB/s, depending on the devices involved. If you have a 100Mbit/s network switch or a bad cable that causes the Ethernet port to slow down, you'd get speeds around the 10MB/s mark. I don't have a HDD attached to my Z9X 8K, so can't give you a real world performance figure, however 30MB/s (not 30Mb/s, as you wrote), seems a bit slow. If you are genuinely only getting 30Megabits/second, then you have a network fault. Check all the Ethernet port lights to make sure every link is at least 1GigE.
Hi, Once again thanks for the input. I have to say I don't know how to check the speeds of my ethernet ports but I have looked at what Zidoo and that seems to indicate that it is receiving 1Gbps. Please seethe attachment. I would expect my PC to be capable as it is a new system that I had built to a high spec. I can't be sure about the router and I do realise the system will be limited by the slowest component.
I would not trust anything on that screen. You are better off looking at the blinkenlights on the Ethernet ports where the cable plugs in. Remember, you need to check both ends of each cable in your network. Different devices have different conventions on what the colours mean, so you may need to consult the relevant documentation. I have some devices where amber means 1,000Mbit/s and some devices where amber means 100Mbit/s. My latest switch uses left LED with green for 10,000Mbit/s and amber for 5,000Mbit/s or right LED with green for 2,500Mbit/s and amber for 1,000Mbit/s or 100Mbit/s. In that case it's not even possible to tell whether a connected Zidoo Ethernet port is too slow. I connect the Zidoo to a downstream 1,000Mbit/s switch and there green is good and amber is slow.
