Hello, and thank you for reading my first post on this forum. I've been happy with my Z9X 8K and QNAP TR-004 DAS combo. I have about 26tb of video on the DAS using exFAT and a software controlled RAID 5 array. The DAS contains 4 18tb hdd's. Recently, after loading a few more movies onto the DAS from my PC, the Zidoo stopped mounting the DAS. Some info and what I've tried below: DAS spins up all 4 drives when plugged into zidoo and blue USB light comes on as before USB source does not show up anywhere in zidoo DAS works just fine plugged into my PC and I can read and write just fine. Windows did not find any errors in the drives, nor did the QNAP RAID Manager software. Swapped cables, tried wiggling the usb, tried all usb 3.0 and 2.0 ports: No dice. Plugged a usb flash stick into the zidoo and it came up just fine Anything else I should try before reformatting the drives in the DAS? If I go this route, should I switch to hardware RAID (using DIP Switches to select RAID 5)? Is there another format than exFat that would be more reliable? Is my best bet to start using this array as a DAS? Thank you in advance for your help! P.S- Please note that I tried searching the forums for help on this issue, but could not find anything pertaining to my specific situation. I apologize if this has already been answered before and will gratefully accept any links to previous posts.
Here are a few more details I forgot to put into the first post: Both devices are on current firmware: Zidoo v1.3.05 and QNAP TR-004 1.2.0. When I ran the Windows error check it initially showed "scanning and repairing" before ultimately coming back clean with no errors found. Windows used to flag the drive with an error warning every time I plugged it in, but everything worked fine on both the PC and the Zidoo despite that. Now that warning has stopped appearing when I plug the DAS into my PC, and that seems to coincide with when the Zidoo stopped mounting it. Finally, this didn't happen after any firmware update on either device. It happened right after I loaded about 500GB of new video onto the DAS from my PC. No other changes were made. Thanks again!
Have you tried powering down the Zidoo using the switch on the rear? After you have done that, connect the DAS and power it on, wait for all the HDDs to spin up (usually around 20 ~ 30 seconds) and finally power on the Z9X 8K using the switch on the rear.
I run into this issue quite frequently when I use a USB DAS (formatted as RAID 5 using NTFS file format) as additional storage on my ReadyNAS systems. It is associated with a " dirty bit" being set of the DAS file system after an error usually due to a drive going "bad" . The DAS allows hot plug repair after inserting a new replacement drive, however when the DAS is "restored ie redundant again, no drive errors etc. the NAS will not recognise that the DAS is attached. However plugging the very same DAS into a Windows PC and all is ok. To recover from this I usually have to reformat the DAS (maybe two or three times!). So transfer the files to an equivalent device and then reformat the original DAS. Before I transfer any files back to the DAS I connect it to the NAS to check that it is recognised, if not I reformat again until it is. Then I connect it empty and then transfer the files to it whilst connected to the NAS. To get over this once the DAS is connected and recognised I NEVER remove it or only by carrying out a "safe eject" and certainly never remove it to plug into a PC. This seems to be associated with NTFS if I format the DAS as BTFS or an ext3/4 filesystem then the NAS has no issues. This is probably down to the native operating system of the NAS being linux based and still seeing a "dirty bit" set even though Windows reports as OK. Having said all that, I also have a Synology NAS and that does not exhibit this type of behaviour on an NTFS DAS., so the ReadyNAS is a bit finicky. Not that this information helps you directly in solving your issue but this seems to be a NTFS/filesystem issue not a Zidoo issue
That's interesting about your NAS and the corrupted bit. I'm trying to exhaust all options before formatting the drives.
