I have just got a Z9X 8K to replace an aging Nvidia Shield, and use a wired connection to my network so I don't need to use wifi. Usually the antennas on AV kit just unscrew, but there is obviously some trick to removing the ones from the Z9X! Can someone advise on how you do this without causing damage?
Very easy - remove the feet (just sticky pads), remove the 4 screws and remove the bottom plate. Remove the motherboard (another 4 screws) and flip over - you'll see where the antennae connectors connect to the MB - just flip off with a spudger or similar (may help to disconnect the power switch cable). The antennae are easy to remove from the inside with long nose pliers. I then fill the holes with a blanking grommet. I recommend using a zap strap while doing this.
Thanks Mark! I don't understand why the antennas can't be easily user removed and you need to invalidate the warranty, but now that I know they can't be removed from the outside, I shall open it up.
It seems like a dangerous process for an amateur in that you could easily damage the motherboard if you don't know what you're doing. The antennas are easy to pull out and cut the wires. Since you void the warranty either way, is there any reason not to go that route?
Proper disconnection and removal of the antennae is a reversible process that is unlikely to affect warranty if done with sufficient care. Ripping them out and cutting wires - not so much.
It isn't. You could just as easily put a bit of gaffa tape over the hole or leave it open. Up to you to decide how neat you want it and if there are any risks involved, such as little curious fingers poking in.
Isn't one of them used for Bluetooth? I would likely never use wifi with my device, but I enjoy the Bluetooth remote.
Yes, one is wifi, one is bluetooth - can't remember which ones! If you find the aerials obtrusive they can also be replaced with stubbies.
