Z9X 8K Dolby VS10 is worse than Z9X Pro and Dune 8K

I'm not going to dispute SpikeSIK's findings for a moment, it's just my experience is slightly different.

Firstly, this discussion is about using VS10 to map to SDR Rec.709 only and there are always going to be discrepancies between devices when you're doing that. Particularly with this device since it uses a newer iteration of VS10 and in the case of Dolby Vision, the RPU is used more accurately than it is for example with older Zidoo devices, old and new Dune devices and indeed a lot of older UHD BluRay players.

Also, this device is the only one I know that overcomes the well known LLDV chroma weight bug found by Stacey Spears a couple of years ago, but bizarrely, only in VS10 SDR. I can only assume someone at Dolby woke up for a couple of minutes while programming that bit of the library and then immediately dozed off again...

I found similar issues with The Meg as above, but then other go to scenes (Aquaman, Wall-E for example) I found to be far more accurately mapped.

So it's not cut and dried, and if I'm honest I don't think it's an issue - I've been testing these boxes for months now and even have one installed for real world viewing in my cinema and in my opinion, picture quality has iteratively increased over previous boxes.

Admittedly I don't use it in Rec.709 day to day, but it's certainly something I use in testing.

    Thank you very much
I think I'll try the new one then, and post my feedback asap.

@SpikeSIK - Man I love all the screenshot you shared here. I was looking to buy the 8k model but bought the Z9x Pro instead. What is your settings in the Z9x Pro player?

I would like to replicate that in my setup. My projectors are the Epson UB5040 and JVC RS540. I most likely will use it with the JVC and also would like to see how it would look on the Epson. I have Vetex2 but would like to test with the Vertex2 in the chain and also without. Thank you!

@Markswift2003 - Could you also recommend the best settings I could try with both Epson UB5040 and JVC RS540? I will experiment uploading the EDIDs shared and compare it against the SDR Tome mapping madVR.

I can't speak for the Epson because I have no experience with them and I don't know how good the JVC is at HDR - my old X7000 was 2 years older than yours and that was awful so I had to create a custom gamma curve which was a game changer.

So several ways to approach it, but I'd use LLDV with the Dolby Block set at 400nits, but then as I say, it depends how good HDR is on that JVC as to whether a custom gamma is necessary or not but I'd expect to be able to get better results with rather than without.

Also, I assume that PJ disables the auto iris in HDR mode like my X7000 did - so I used to use the Vertex to disable the HDR message getting to the projector (so it didn't know HDR was coming) and set a picture mode manually (BT.2020 colour and HDR Gamma) - in that way I could use Auto Iris.

Many thanks. It is a good starter point. I prefer HDR to SRD on the JVC540 rather than HDR. The RS540 is not good at handling HDR. I plan to calibrate the JVC using the JVC's Autocal and see if I get any improvement in HDR.

Autocal probably won't make a huge difference to HDR, but try the attached gamma - load through Autocal - it's the one I used to use with my X7000. I pushed it as far as I could without blowing out.

To be fair, these players do a damn good job at HDR to SDR using VS10, particularly with DV content because they use the RPU to tone map to SDR.

Saved. I will give it a try. It is reassuring to hear the player is great at HDR to SDR conversion.

I have pre-ordered a new native 4k HDR/DV tri-laser DLP projector but won't be released until summer 2025. This should hold me fine until then.

    A Valerion by any chance?

That should be interesting although I'm not sure I'd go from LCOS to DLP but laser is a lot more convenient than bulb projection.

There seems to have been a lot of hype drummed up about them but so far only from the box openers on YouTube - I'd like to see a proper review of one and they do look suspiciously like the Hisense 4K RGB lasers.

    Wasn't this topic actually about:
    ”Z9X 8K Dolby VS10 is worse than Z9X Pro and Dune 8K” ?

Yeah, I hear you. LCOS is the king. I have always loved the DLP feel and look but black level is their weakness. There is a huge discussion at AVS forum regrading these new projectors from Valerion. A few beta testers swear that it is the real deal. We shall see. The EBL feature seem to address DLP's weakness of black level.

Projectorjunkies has reviewed two of their models if you are curious to read pro review >>> https://www.projectorjunkies.com/category/projector-reviews/

What drove me to this projector is not only my love for DLP but the MAIN reason is the big three seem to price their projectors sky high. So they lost my sale for Chinese projector. I have no plan to mortgage my house to buy a damn projector. This is going to be the last projector. Next upgrade is going to be 98"+ TV once I figure out how to get it my house :)

Certainly extremely interesting, and yeah, the big boys' prices have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous, as I well know!

I'm not sure a huge telly would do it for me - I'm a lover of cinema - dark room, 100 nits off the screen, but to be honest I haven't seen one of those 100" monster TVs up close and personal so I may be mistaken.

But these Valerions have me curious and apart from the contrast ratios (which are why I've bought JVC the last 3 times) the results look very impressive.

Hi all, just bought Z9X 8K and plan to use it with 1080p SDR projector. I have changed output for all HDR format to SDR, and notice by default the vs10 engine is off for all HDR format. Should I leave it off and should I turn vs10 engine on?

No, it's the same as it was. A lot of color clipping on HDR to SDR through VS10 on the latest firmware. I don't think things will change.
