That is not a fair comparison. As company you pay more and you get a reserved bandwidth.
As customer you get a bandwidth when available.

If there is no fiber you get the old coax or phone line. also expensive but asymmetrical .

It is interesting to see what others are getting, internet-wise - I'm getting the following via Ethernet: -

    Screenshot 2025-12-24 105610.jpg

I've just gone back to Sky after a spell with Virgin as at the time Sky were not doing full-fibre to my home. Principal reasons for going back are that Sky's now offering full-fibre and in particular their WiFi is superior to Virgin's. Could only manage 25/40 mbps with Virgin - I'm now averaging 300/450 mbps in every room - happy days and for £43 per month for Sky's 900 mbps Gigafast service :)

AUD$105/month (about 60 Euros). The plan is sold as 1,000/100, but neither of those speeds are actually attainable in real life.

Almost all Internet connections in Australia are from retailers that use government owned infrastructure (NBN - National Broadband Network). All the resellers sell the exact same plans that the NBN makes available. There is minimal competition on pricing as the wholesale prices are fixed and the retailers provide very little value add.

There are only very few faster plans available, with the fastest being 2,000/500 (real speeds 1,700/420) for $235/month (about 135 Euros). Speeds faster than 1,000/100 are only available to people who have FTTP (fibre to their house/apartment), which at the moment is about 1/3 of the population and even then it requires an upgrade to the installed equipment as these speeds only became available a month ago and the existing NBN equipment can not go faster than 1,000/100.

A provocative question: why do private users who don't download movies need such broad internet bandwidth?

An excellent question! I have an fttc connection of 80/20 and a symmetrical 1Gb fttp connection and there is absolutely no difference in day to day performance between them, even for streaming.

Quite simply, to get from A to B, a car with 50 hp is sufficient, but we want a couple of hundred hp. My current car has 263 hp and the new one in 4 months will have 363 hp. It's the same with internet speed, you can never have enough.

Example: When I start a game and there is an update, usually 10–30 GB, it is much faster with a 1 GB connection than with a 50 Mb connection.

Have you ever tried playing games on your PC by downloading them from Steam with a 20 MB connection? Games that nowadays average 70 GB or more?
    Lagging on YouTube? Lagging everywhere?
That's why, when you can use fast connections (and unfortunately, this is quite rare outside of large population centers), you take full advantage.

    Hello,
For me, €36/month in France—not the cheapest, but very stable, in a small town of 5,000 inhabitants.

For me it's work from home. On some days my workflow can involve transferring tens of GB several times an hour and productivity takes a hit while waiting for this to complete every time.
