This 4K UHD Blu-Ray, issue is driving me insane :(

No matter how I rip my movies, they play back in HDR10 @ 60Hz, when I play them back as full 4K UHD Blu-Ray rip with/via the blu-ray menu.
If I play the via the "direct" play option where you don't get the menu, they play back correct in the correct framerate and with the correct HDR format, either DolbyVision or HDR10 and so on.
I have tried everything, even re-muxing the full disk via BD-Rebuilder and even downloading the same disc that I own, just to see if they preform any different, and all have the same issue

Normal 1080p Blu-Ray with plays correctly via the menus, matching framerate, colorspace and so forth, and of cause all MKV files and other formats play with correct HDR format and framerate, I really don't get it, and I am tearing my hair out

What am I doing wrong, I am beginning to think that either the Zidoo Z9X is not able to play back UHD 4K Blu-Ray discs with full menus, with framerate and HDR format matched correctly or I am doing something completely wrong, and I can't for the life of me figure out what it is :(

I have ripped with MakeMKV and DVDFab, I own both programs and no matter how I rip the 4K UHD Blu-RAy discs, the issues are the same.

Please help a desperate Zidoo Z9X owner, the player is bought for the sole purpose of playing UHD 4K Blu-Ray discs with full menus, and no matter what I tried, I can not get it to do this, I will provide all the info needed to solve this, just tell me what to post here ?

Maybe somebody can share their settings for or how they rip their 4K UHD Blu-Ray discs ?

The desperate but grateful Zidoo Z9X owner :)

I just checked playback with full menu on the new Friday The 13th 4K disc and I don't have the problem. Is your Zidoo set to output LLDV or regular TV-led DV? Below are my settings

Looking at your settings it looks like you are forcing your player to output everything in Dolby Vision in 3840 x 2160p @ 23.976 ?

The z9x should be able to output it in the correct resolution and HDR/DV format by setting everything to automatic, the way you set it up it converts all content to DV via the VS10 engine, so if you choose a non HDR or standard HDR file it will convert it to DV and that is in no way correct playback or optimal for best / most correct playback, to my understanding:confused:

This is in no way a criticism of the way you have set up your z9x, but not the way intended for the z9x to work, as it should be able to output almost all formats at their native resolution, framerate, dynamic range, color depth and so on....

But I tried out your settings and with them I can force the z9x into playing back in dolby vision even when playing UHD blu-ray via the menus, but everything else is also output in dolby vision even when the files being played back are not in dolby vision

    Hope this makes sense :)

Yes, I know what I am doing. The switch frame rate setting will force original content frame rate out and everything will be output with DV. I chose this setting to reduce the number of HDMI renegotiation and because I think the Zidoo & VS10 engine does a decent job to upscale 1080p resolution and does not alter the original color much when converting to DV.

I don't doubt that you know what you are doing, but maybe you could try setting things to automatic, to confirm if my findings are correct, because if my experience is correct, then it is a bug in the current firmware and I woul like to report it to Zidoo, so they can look into it and correct the issue in a future firmware update, because it should work as advertised by Zidoo :)

Your help is very much appreciated and I am great full for you taking the time to answer me , thank you :):)

Just did it. I know what I am doing but realized that there was a flaw in the test. Changed the two settings and the result is the same. 4K TV-Led DV in 23.976hz as it should be.

Thank you very much, will keep trying to figure out why I can't get the same results as you with the same settings

Might I ask how you rip your UHD blu-rays, what program do you use and what settings, woumd like to make sure that my rips are made the correct way and the same way as you do it ?

Just ordered Friday The 13th UHD blu-ray so I can replicate the exact same same testing environmentas you ?

Thanks again for all your help and support :)

MakeMkv to do full decrypted backup and then use ISO Maker to package the folder structure to a single file ISO. I like keeping them all together on my NAS.

Same procedure as me, except for the iso oart, will try to make a couple of the discs into iso with ISO maker and see if that helps :)

Do you by any chance have a link to the exact ISO Maker program, that you are using, just so I have the exact same ripping and ISO creation workflow ?

And thanks again for all your help, it is very much appreciated :)

What is the full name of your ISO maker, maybe a link, as there are dozens listed?

Finally my UHD blu-ray of Friday the 13th arrived, so will begin testing with that one....
I have a suspension that the issue is that the z9x still has problems with full Dolby Vision profile 7 using the base layer + RPU / MEL&FEL, when playing back uhd blu-ray via the menus, but let's see what happens...

There are definitely no intrinsic problems with dvhe.07 BL+EL+RPU, so the issue lies elsewhere.

Let's see what happens, if there is any advice you can give in regards to display output from the z9x and perfect uhd blu-ray via menus, it is very much appreciated, i am connected directly to my Sony 77" a80j ?

Not really I'm afraid - I only use BD ISOs and BDMV structures for testing and while there are plenty of issues with BD Menu in itself, playback in HDR10 60Hz regardless of input dynamic range and frame rate isn't one of them.

    UNITED 30/11.

is a UHD disc mastering / z9x compatibility issue with discs from; Arrow Video, 88 Films and Shout Factory, so far all the discs, I tested from them, playback incorrectly.

I have solved the 60hz playback issue with discs from them, by selecting TV-led DV, this helps with the player auto framerate switching on playback via menus, but not the DV issue.

So far these discs does not play back correctly via menus, framerate is working when TV-led DV is selected on the z9x, but they are only output in HDR not DV:
    Cat People (1982) - Shout
    Childs Play (1988)- Shout
    Childs Play 2 (1990)- Shout
    Childs Play 3 (1991)- Shout
    Drive (1997) 88 Films
    Phenomena (1985) - Arrow
    Tenebrae (1982) - Arrow
    Tremors (1990) - Arrow
    True Romance (1993) - Arrow
    Wild Things (1988) - Arrow
Stopped updating titles an will just list labels that are affected from now on:
    Shout
    Arrow
    88 Films
    Kino Lorber
    StudioCanal

So far these discs play back correctly, no matter if if TV-led DV or LLDV is selected, both framerate and DV is output correctly:
    Friday the 13th (1980) - Paramount
    The Piano (1993) - Criterion
    Real Genius - Sony and
    Fatal Attraction - Paramount
More discs to come as I rip and test them....

    UPDATED:
The Piano from Criterion, plays back correctly, so it is mastered in the "correct" way for the z9x to play it back, I am beginning to suspect that I might be on to something here....
I am currently ripping; The Piano (1993) from Criterion, wondering if that causes issues too, thinking that it might because it is not a release from one of the big publishers but a "boutique label" like Arrow, Shout, 88 Films and many others, and they might not be mastering their discs "correctly", just my thoughts, but I might be wrong....

So I anyone have ripped the discs mentioned and gotten other results, please let me know, but after ripping Friday the 13th (1980) from Paramount, I will try ripping some of my other UHD discs from Sony, Warner, Fox and so on to see if they play back correctly like Friday the 13th (1980) from Paramount, witch I suspect they will, but lets see what happens :)

If what I am getting at turns out to be true, how do I report the issues to the firmware developers, so they can look in to the issue and maybe correct it, if possible ?

    Cheers...

I have Cat People in ISO. It plays correctly. My setup is Z10 Pro --> Denon 3700H --> LG C9. What are the equipment in your HDMI chain?
