Thank you for the clarification. I had an issue earlier where playback would pause, resume, pause, resume and eventually stop, but never reboot. My issue was that I was hammering the resources on my file server while playing back a high bitrate 4k remux. Once I stopped doing that, my problem went away. But my device was not rebooting.

 

After reset to factory setting 3 times (completely reset to original), I played a movie last night and it went through without freezing or restart. So seem like this issue is fixed. Im still having problem with the projector, does anybody have any ideal how to change the setting to make it work?

Does the 8K box handle subtitles different from the OG Z9X?

With my original box, I set the subtitles to appear within the frame of a movie ONCE, and then forgot about it. From then on, it didn't matter what the aspect ratio of the movies was on my scope screen, the subtitles were always visible.

I can't seem to find that universal setting on the 8K. More frustrating is the fact that every single movie I've watched throws up some kind of notice that the subtitles of that particular movie cannot be customized (or words to that effect)... My room is completely blacked out..I hate seeing subtitles below the image of my screen...

 

It depends on the subtitle type.

SRT are just text subtitles so are generated by the box from a text file. They can be positioned anywhere and that position is persistent.

PGS subtitles are graphics, ie images and they containing formatting information including position. That's also why you can't change colour on PGS subs, because it's a picture.

So with PGS, you can set position in one video but when you open the next the formatting information in the file decides position - if it didn't and the position you manually set persisted then that position would be relative to the defined formatted position and if that's different to the last file, it could end up in the middle of the screen.

The position is decided by whomever has mastered the video and sometimes they put them in the margins, particularly with TV series, because they assume you're watching on a TV.

In my experience this doesn't happen often with movies though, especially BluRay rips.

The "The current subtitle does not support adjustment" dialogue is coming up presumably because you have forced subs switched on, and therefore even though the sub is showing because of the Forced setting, the subtitle is not actually selected for adjustment - if you go into subtitle selection, select the forced sub and then select adjust, it'll work.

I don't think this behaviour has changed.

Why 12 bit, when the LED TV ist natively a 10bit one?

 

The source is always 8 or 10-bit 4:2:0 so whether you choose 10-bit 4:4:4, 10-bit RGB or 12-bit 4:2:2 will make to difference to the image - you're always stuck with the colour information in 4:2:0 and changing to 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 doesn't improve on that.

12-bit 4:2:2 just reduces HDMI bandwidth considerably over 10-bit 4:4:4 and it has to be 12-bit because that's the only it depth for 4:2:2 in the HDMI spec.

Ideally you'd use 10-bit 4:2:0 but that's only legal at 50-60Hz.

 

Thank you, Markswift. I Understand. But: does not the zidoo "upscale" the Colour Depth from 10 to 12 Bit and has not the TV then to "downscale" from 12 to 10 Bit, when i Use 12-Bit Setting? So both have to do a lot of inefficient work?

 

And: I love my Zidoo! The best Player i ever owned ;-)

 

Yes and no - the source is 10-bit so when it's output as a 12-bit signal it's just padded, so when it's displayed it's still the same 10-bit signal in a 12-bit word. Nothing is added or lost.

As I say, if it bothers you, use 10-bit 4:4:4 - it honestly won't make any difference.

Actually - let me qualify that:

It's feasible that there could be a difference between 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 - technically the display does of course play a part in this. A display is RGB by definition so whatever happens on the input, it's always converted to RGB. Since the source is 4:2:0, that's two values per 8 pixels, so regardless of whether you transport in 4:2:2 (4 values per 8 pixels) or 4:4:4/RGB (8 values per 8 pixels - ie lossless) you can only ever transport those original two values.

How those two values are translated to the screen **could** be different if a display handles 4:2:2 different to 4:4:4 - and if that were the case there's nothing really to say which would potentially be best.

However - I've never seen a display do this and never heard of it happening and if you **were** to see a difference you'd need something like a colour subsampling test pattern to do it.

The other option is to flip a coin

 

@Markswift2003 , in Media Player, is there a way to search for a movie title? Also, is there a quicker way to get to Favorites?

 

If you mean Media Center, then no, there is no search function, it's just a file manager.

Favourites opens in Media Center automatically as long as there is no local storage plugged in. If there is, it's accessed by the left menu bar (press left arrow).

 

Yes, Favorites in Media Center, as I have multiple drives and put Movies and Concerts folders in Favorites. Many vids to set up well in HT5.
So search only in HT5?

 

Yes. HT5 is database driven.

 

Hi, is there a guide/link to efficiently set up HT5? Have drives with separate folders for 'Movies' and 'Concerts'? Concerts are mostly MKV rips, but some are only from Youtube.

 

No guide I'm aware of but the key is being logical in setting up sources - so in your case keep movies and concerts separate is easy because they're on different drives.

 

Actually they're (ie. Movies and Concerts) not in separate drives, but rather, in separate folders. So I have drives having both folders in them.

 

So if you have say a "concerts" folder and a "movies" folder you can define them as different "Sources" to keep everything separate. If you have multiple drives with multiple concerts and movies folders you'd still define each as a Source but then you can aggregate them using "Multi Device" in the Widget edit screen.

 

Using UHD 8000 for Valerion visionmaster max, with Advanced HDR settings, for Dolby VS10 for HDR10 content Yes or No; Dolby VS10 for HDR10+ content Yes or No; Dolby VS10 for HLG content Yes or No and finally Dolby VS10 for DV content Yes or No. If all are no to Dolby VS10, what's the use it then? Thanks for any advice in advance

 

Not entirely sure what you're asking but you first choose what output mode you want for each of SDR, HLG, HDR10, HDR10+ and DV inputs, and then you decide whether you want to use VS10 or not.

The combination you choose for each input mode will determine whether you get a native output for a given input, or output processed by the AML engine, or processed by the VS10 engine.

eg

HDR10 Content output mode = "HDR" and Dolby Vision VS10 for HDR = "No" means HDR10 is output natively.

HDR10 Content output mode = "HDR" and Dolby Vision VS10 for HDR = "Yes" means HDR10 is processed by VS10.

Note that a DV output, whether native or processed, requires VS10 so the VS10 setting is irrelevant in that case.

 

My concern is should I leave the setting at auto or in advance HDR with Yes?
