NAS recommendation for z2000 Pro?

Seeing what NAS setups can be suggested for me.
I'm completely new to NAS even though it's been around for a while, but hopefully I get to grips with it.

Was going to just buy a 3.5" HDD to put into the z2000 Pro. But now I'm really liking the idea of having a NAS, not only to connect to the z2000 pro to play media via USB, but running 24/7 to access all my media on the go via my laptop and mobile phone. On that note I was thinking I should have just got the z9x Pro to begin within. But hey never tried or understood all this NAS stuff before. Wish I did now!

Let's just say I have a budget of up to £1000 GBP ideally, with around 20-30TB of storage. Might even catch a good 'Black Friday' deal and save.

I've only got these 2 NAS in mind:

    1. Synology ds723+ (Or maybe a model with more bays like the DS1522+, if it works out cheaper that way with more smaller capacity HDD purchases)

    OR

    2. Asustor AS6706T Lockerstor 6 Gen2 or if that's overkill the Asustor AS5404T

Feel free to mention if you have others in mind:

Then there's choosing the hard disks, and would like to avoid ones that are going to sound like a welding workshop.

Keep the HDDs at 14TB or lower to maintain on noise. WD Red Plus and Ultrastar which I have now are almost silent. The enterprise HDDs like Seagate Ironwolf and Red Pro are going to be noisier.

That's exatcly what I've been looking at, the WD Red Plus x2 12TB drives
Ultrastar not so sure about, they're data center/Enterprise HDD's I would have thought they are noisy as heck. One Youtube video was classing them as even 15% noisier than the Red pro. But I guess that might be subject to HDD capacity.

I got 2 WD Ultrastar DC HC530 (Renewed) - 14TB, recently from Amazon, and they are both quiet.

I have a DS220+ Synology NAS. It's 2 bay which enough for me as I don't keep an extensive library. I have 2 WD Reds 4tb disks in a RAID setup. This is my second Synology NAS and find them excellent. The interface is very user friendly. Recommend the WD Reds. They've been running 24/7 for years and still going strong.

Gotcha. Noticed there's various generations of Ultrastars, before I was thinking they were all the same.

Cool, that's very reassuring to hear. Assuming you have Red Plus models and that they are quiet enough to be tolerated.

Yes Red Plus bought in July 2018 and going strong. I have the NAS sited about 12 feet from where I sit in the lounge. I can hear disc activity from time to time when room quiet but overall wouldn't know its there.

QNAP here, no issue with this (aging TS-431P).

Do you ever user the QNAP to stream media (video, music) on your phone?

Absolutely not, just as file repository for the whole home. But last time I tried to use it as DLNA server to stream to a TV, it was a mess, the media streaming of the QNAP was bad and bugged.

Go with the synology. You can expand it with an add on drive bay...which will make it a 7 bay NAS.
That is handy for upgrading later.

Synology is excellent in updating their software and keeping it safe.

That's a shame to hear. While the Zidoo z2000 pro is embarassing to use at the moment, I think I'm going to hold back for now rushing into a NAS. Got a feeling QNAP will release something around the corner in 2024, hopefully by then Zidoo will sort themselves out and make their boxes run as they should have on release.

I was steering strongly towards Synology but they seem to be favouring more for business use than home owner media. Again I've decided to hold back rushing for a NAS, while Zidoo sort themselves out making their latest line of boxes run as they should first. Hopefully in 2024 will see some more interesting options available in the NAS world, and even more so cheaper HDD.

I wanted to ask have you ever had issues using your NAS setup with a Zidoo media player? In terms of accessing and playing files etc? Any limitations or major flaws using a NAS with the media player?

Same question to anyone else here who has been using a NAS setup with their Zidoo media players.

    Thanks

their business mentality makes them so good ;)
But storing data is storing data.

It is a big investment to start with a NAS....indeed better to think about it a while.

Did you think about DAS instead of NAS?

Never had problems attaching a NAS to any mediaplayer (self built or ready made). They are easy to set up..and most systems support SMB or NFS.

I think Synology are excellent for home OR business. Their interface is very user friendly.

I had a connectivity issue where sources would randomly become temporarily unavailable. However I'm sure that was not an issue with the NAS. I have since changed the ethernet patch cable between the NAS and my gigabit switch and that seems to have sorted it. It's now running without a hitch.

If you mean like an external HDD, I have a 8TB WD, and then I was thinking of putting a 14-17 TB drive inside the z200 Pro. But then I was reading people using NAS, no idea what it was before (as you can see I'm not very tech savvy) and was thinking holy crap this has a heck of a lot more use cases than a DAS and not just for the Zidoo media player. And now thinking about it if I want to build a really good collection of high quality music and movies even 20TB won't cut it. So NAS it is.... in 2024/whenever Zidoo sort their crap out :d

Cool glad there's no incompatibility issues.

Here and other places the Synology votes are strong, hardly much cheering for the other brands :d
I might be able to hold out and see what 2024 brings, very likely be a Synology now unless a game changer is around the corner for release. Might invest on some HDD deals in the meantime though. Again re-assuring to see NAS compaitibily is strong with Zidoo.
People don't seem to be very big on remote access to their NAS setups though to give me some feedback on (using inteneral and external network), because I'd be very big on this using my laptop and/or mobile phone.

I have a QNAP, and WD EX4100 NAS. Both work fine with my Zidoo Z2600. I have SMB Zamba enabled in the Zidoo that allows access to movies on both NAS. I have the WD4100EX mapped as H and QNAP mapped as L drives for movie subdirectories. Both are seen from within the Zidoo as sources I added for my poster wall. If your devices support smb v1 you should be good. You will just need to enable Samba share from within the Zidoo device.
