I put the Panasonic UB820 back in and can fast forward and rewind as many times as I want without any issues with the video from the disc (really?)
- Problems with both internal and external. Without distinction.
PS On the other hand, now that I use audio and video on HDMI1 I have many more interruptions due to handshake, hurray!

Regarding the video codecs, there are several. I can list a few that I know will definitely cause problems.
-Video: HVC1 3840x2160 23.976fps (HEVC Main 10 L5.1, YUV420P10LE, 3840x2160)
-Video: HVC1 3840x2160 24fps (HEVC Main 10 L5.1, YUV420P10LE, 3840x2160)
But generally they're all like this and they all cause problems.
Lately, I've been testing the Cinema 30 and the frequent handshakes (I switched to HDMI port 2 on the TV to get eARC, but I started having a lot of problems. Before, I was connected directly from Zidoo to the TV on HDMI 3, not needing the audio return channel).
So, I don't entirely blame Zidoo for the video dropouts, but I read that the LG G4 also has serious complaints about port 2.
Obviously, it's not that Zidoo has never dropped the video on port 3, but they were isolated cases and not as frequent as they are now on port 2.
I bought a new optical HDMI cable identical to one from a friend who has the same TV and receiver as me, but has an Oppo 203 instead of the Zidoo, and everything works fine for him with HDMI 2 without any problems, so we'll see; it's just a matter of trial and error.
The stutter issue, however, doesn't change based on the receiver or connection port; it's always there; all it takes is fiddling with fast forward and rewind or skipping chapters to immediately trigger problems.
I'll try the reduced-resolution dash, but I don't really like it as a solution; the 4K dash is one of the reasons that pushed me to change my camera.

When you say "handshakes" I assume you mean HDMI sync - this is irrelevant to this discussion. This thread is about stutter only.

I have no idea what you are referring to with "reduced-resolution dash" and "4K dash".

To get back to the issue of stutter:

So we have:

1. You use a 4K UI - Try 2K UI
2. You use Passthrough Compatible mode - that is correct, so that is not the issue, this should always be "On"
3. Your files are not 11 audio tracks or more - so that is not the issue - less than 11 audio tracks is fine
4. Your files are HEVC Main10 L5.1 - so that is not the issue, HEVC is fine.
5. You use internal storage - that might be the issue

My current theory is that there is a memory issue with the internal storage controller because that's the only difference I can find between my setup and those who report stutter and a 4K UI seems to tip the balance (in some cases).

 

So, all things being equal, does it not come down to occam's razor? I do think some have stutter, but my guess it's f/w version....we won't know until the next f/w drops (hopefuly this week).

 

Out of curiosity, do you mean the actual rewind/fast forward buttons, or seeking with the left/right arrows?

I didn't think the former worked on these boxes and didn't even program them to my harmony because of that.

I tried moving the internal drive to an external enclosure so that all drives are connected to USB only. Nothing, same problems.
It's not the internal drive's fault I think.

 

Internal or external, it doesn't matter. Both work via USB. You need to check if these problems occur when playing from a network drive.

 

No, I don't think it's the actual drive, but more to do with the interface.

If you access for example the SATA drive, that may not release memory which then causes issues on other interfaces, eg USB or network.

Internal is SATA.

 

The AML S928X does not have a SATA output. The SATA connection is implemented using a converter through the chipset's USB output. The same converters are found in every external HDD enclosure with a USB output. The internal and external HDD connections to the chipset are the same. The HDD bay in the Zido is an integrated USB HDD enclosure.

 

I tried this out. I couldn't get rewind to work, but you're right that fast forward does work! Didn't know that.

 

Cool, I didn't know that, but checking the datasheet, yes, no native SATA so a SATA to USB bridge must be used - so this might explain a lot!

 

FYI, I have not been able to notice any stutters under normal use after upgrading to the new firmware.

 

Please remind us what problems you experienced before the update.

 

Random stutters during playback. Can sometimes be fixed by a simple rewind, or a restart almost always worked. Cannot be replicated on the same files.

 

Seems like no one is complaining about the stutters here anymore after the update. This is a good sign!
