Purchased a SACD from a well-known online site and it's a fake or counterfeit disc. It's supposed to be a SACD / CD hybrid disc with a limited edition individually serial numbered copy. When my disc arrived, I was happy to put it in one of my SACD players to listen to it. However, my Sony SCD-XA5400ES simply wouldn't recognise the SACD layer. Thinking my player might have developed a fault I grabbed another SACD / CD hybrid disc off the shelf and it played the SACD layer flawlessly. So I tried the new disc in a another SACD player and a few universal players and only the standard Red Book CD layer could be detected and played. No SACD layer detected. So I did a bit of further investigating. I put the disc in my SACD ripper drive and it wasn't recognised as a SACD. Next step was to put the disc under the microscope to read the matrix code. Well absolutely no surprises here the code is not a valid SACD code, rather a generic "A900" CD/DVD code frequently used by bootleggers. Another red flag was the SACD pictured in the listing clearly shows the serial number as 1043 of 1100 with more than 900 copies available to purchase. The disc I received had the same serial number but the "S" in S/N has been misprinted with the S mostly obscured. Now if these are supposed to be individually serial numbered how can two discs bear the same serial number but one misprinted? Definitely a counterfeit disc. I checked if the SACD was listed on Discogs and it is. TM-SACD9021.2 It shows or implies there were only 550 discs pressed. What do you guys think? If you want to know which online store I purchased this from please feel free to DM me for the details.
