Hi, I'm a newbie digging into the T8, received just a week ago. So far all is working well but I'm struggling with an external SSD plugged into the USB OTG, have tried with both connectors. Actually the external SSD contains around 2TB of music organized in folders. The SSD works perfectly well when connected to the Macbook, using Audirvana, Roon, Qobuz, etc, but when plugged into the T8 nothing shows up, SSD is not listed nowhere. I have been using the external SSD with a Macbook, meaning the the SSD is formatted as APFS, I guess that the T8 is able to detect it, or not? Have been searching under all the user guides but nothing found that far. Any help?
The format of the SSD may well be an issue, I use exFAT for my drives but am PC based not Mac. Another is the amount of current that external SSD might draw from the T8 over USB. One suggestion for this would be to use a powered USB Hub between the SSD and the T8.
Have tried connecting a power supply to the SSD box, no success. Now transferring all files into another SSD, once done I will format to exFAT, hopefully it will work.
I'm back! After formatting the SSD to exFAT, the T8 still doesn't recognize the external drive. I have tried, again, using an external power supply connected to the SSD box but with the same result. The SSD box power light is on, with and without the external power supply, meaning that there is enough current using either option. I have also tried to connect the external drive directly into my MacBook as well as through an external USB Hub, with both options it works well. Any idea? or can it be that the T8 USB ports are somehow disabled, not updated, or not working as they should? Thanks Edit: formatted as FAT32 = same result, not recognized.
And one more and final attempt to solve the problem. I have managed to format the SSD as Windows NTFS using a software that allows to convert to NTFS and make it compatible with both, Windows and Mac. Again, the SSD works perfectly well when plugged into the MacBook, BUT.... the T8 doesn't recognize it. Now I'm totally lost.... short of other ideas on how to solve the problem, unless the problem is with my T8 unit. Edit: according to the File management user guide, the function "prompt dialog for USB connection" is ON, but nothing happens when connecting/disconnecting the external drive. In theory a dialogue should start at some point, but it doesn't
Just one thought, you are connecting to the OTG USB port and the setting for that port is set to mass storage, not PC ?
Yes, nevertheless I have tried with both as well as with the 3 USB connectors, none recognizes the external SSD
Seeing as the drive is recognised fine with other systems, it seems then there must be an error with the USB system of your T8. One last suggestion would be to try an NVME SSD installed in the T8 rather than an external SSD, but that is also on the overall USB bus of the system so could also fail. The external SSD should work though. Have you tried any other USB drives on the T8 like a simple flash drive to see if it is recognised ? You could also try a factory reset on the T8 as a last resort.
Well, what to say? feeling stupid right now... Sometimes we don't look at the simplest things... after testing with other 4 SSD's, it worked for some but not all... formatted as NTFS, exFAT, etc, but the formatting isn't the problem. The root cause depends just on the USB cable, some work, some not.... funny thing is that all cables work well when connected to a USB hub or MacBook. Just guessing that some cables do conduct energy or electricity enough to make it work with the T8... it sounds weird to me, but this the only explanation I'm able to find. A happy end! and thank you all for reading and trying to support from the distance, it's been a real pleasure. THANK YOU!
