Thanks for your personal observations. Another variable is hearing limitations (which applies to me & other baby boomers). Not only do I prefer less analytical sonics, I prefer less raucous music. From Led Zeppelin of my youth to Robert Plant singing Americana! If tubes + R2R is too much of a good thing, I'm open to trying modern Class D amps. I never want to hear music on analog gear of the 1970s again...muddy vocals, no bass or treble without cranking up 'tone' controls, limited dynamics.

Well, we just know it measures extremely well for an R2R. It sounding great... well, the measurements can just predict; if you're looking for the R2R's typical failures because you like them, most probably you won't find them here, and you'd just say "it does not sound good".

Ray, I have not used any form of tone controls or what you refer to as base or treble , etc., and probably or most accurately speaking in the last 40 + years, I also haven’t played a Led Zeppelin album in a few years. But in personal opinion with reference to my own beliefs and likings you overall equipment and reproduction most importantly, your loudspeakers are going to play the biggest role sonically, too much of a good thing may be quite correct, within the use of any good quality R 2 R yes, there are quite a few out there today and in opinion only you don’t need to spend 5Gs, I believe when I installed the staccato op amps in the front end their sonic characteristics alone, gave me exactly what I was looking for now if I were to pull those out and reinstall the NCD’S op amps I believe this would change quite dramatically difference in sonics, I would say in this particular system employing the Stoccato op amps would definitely be very closely associated within a certain degree to the R 2 R type of sonic signature within overall ‘performance characteristics. an explanation may be too much of a good thing as I so stated earlier, personally speaking in my opinion, I absolutely hear where you’re coming from, however, I don’t know how many folks were present back in the days of the early 1980s with the old steel box Sony CD , I have an original one from back in those days somewhere down below, where no expense was spared. Everything was copper lined, and seriously built like a military piece of equipment, As years go by and times change, I’m putting the past however if you go back and do a little research, guess what type of dac or conversion they were using, I believe you may guess it sometimes we have a tendency to go right back where we almost started from, how about that, ;-)

Again Have a wonderful week everyone got a run :)……

Swapping R2R DAC op amps (e.g. Gustard DR70) is akin to swapping tubes (300B, EL34, etc.) and offers opportunity to tailor sonics to our taste. Similar to digital filter options for ESS/AKM or NOS/OS for R2R. My 1960-70s vinyl and 80-00 CDs sound amazing with modern hifi gear. Surface-mounted R2R resistor arrays with 0.01% precision was impossible to achieve in those 'good old days'. Maybe designs haven't changed but fabrication certainly has..and at affordable prices. Next year might bring new innovations. Can hardly wait.

Yes , I would most definitely say, we’re both somewhat old school, I was referring to the op amps within using a Hattor passive/active pre, using AMRG resistors hand matched and selected top grade from Japan with selectable 3,6,9.db of gain if the user decides to select gain output for use, every op amp sonically differs from the other, same as changing or switching to another brand or make of 300B tube, they absolutely all sonically differ as a matter of fact, quite a bit of sonic differences within Audio reproduction with most of course within the use of correct loudspeakers, also Bring on a much more notable difference. My buddy’s R 2 R Dac I could absolutely live with, however from a sonic standpoint just a little bit too smooth for my personal taste.the AKM 4499 appears to overall perform similarly in some aspects and areas but somewhat happen to be a better performer in my particular case, however I most certainly agree with your post, especially your last statement I believe you’re absolutely correct in that particular area, no doubts about that, ……Great Dacs also the Gustard’s :)

My analytical Left brain has given up convincing my intuitive Right brain that better specs mean better sound. The bare bones R2R DAC in my FiiO DM15 CD player doesn't offer NOS option, yet sounds good to me. Others claim NOS, which adds more distortion. Maybe imperfection is the sweet spot for music lovers but not for mega-buck audiophiles.
To Nutal's point about distortion and imprecision being the reason R2R DAC sound warmer... I wonder if Holo Audio DACs will sound less natural/warmer/analog because of its state-of-art specifications. A perverse, non-logical thought!

Could be, but I am no R2R fan, so cannot argue on this one... ;-)

If you believe asr. They def have a point of view, and are good at measuring what can be measured.

I absolutely and completely agree all measurements, including specifications are extremely imperative to a certain degree, just like anything else that can be measured and evaluated , A few pieces of equipment and other devices that I am currently using absolutely were far from top notch specification performers within measurements being a deciding factor but sonically speaking it certainly seems and Sonically appears without doubt, some of the very best performances in Dacs , along with other source devices to be some of the best sounding equipment, I have ever incorporated into my personal audio system , a Good quality, preamp or amp in general always appeared to be quite stable across the frequency spectrum within general relativity in audible range of human hearing perception, every maker manufacture absolutely will show differences along with deviations, but personal opinion. No one really makes bad equipment today with unacceptable or inferior specifications. Perhaps different . The only specifications that matter to me are the ones that come out of my loudspeakers I am well aware you have quite a few folks that seem to live life around measurements, specifications. I live it one day at a time in accordance to what I’m hearing. again I don’t ignore specifications or measurement’s but my main goal and results revolve around final sonic outcome, not specifications or measurements however, everyone’s entitled to his or her personal beliefs, and opinions, regardless I can only elaborate on what I’m hearing in my audio system as yourself,

Have a great weekend everyone :)
