Following on from the earlier thread about black levels I thought I'd produce a matrix of exactly what each HDR mode does and how well it performs for either an SDR, HDR or DV display.

    To keep it simple:

    Green means it's all good
Amber means some colour conversion issues, but black levels are fine
    Red means raised black levels

There were some unexpected results denoted by the asterisks where the HDR mode wasn't as expected.

I don't think there is any point expecting improvements in Realtek HDR to SDR since that issue has been with us since the Realtek 1295, but I really hope that one day soon these black level issues are fixed for VS10 because that would make this box utterly flexible for any display.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the Realtek SDR to HDR conversion is now pretty good - far better than in 1295 or 1296 boxes where it was a little "overbaked".

So for those with an HDR only display who want everything output in HDR, "Mapping HDR10" is now a valid choice whereas previously it wasn't great for SDR content.

Thanks for these clear and valuable schemes for each display, Mark.
I appreciate the considerable amount of work it must have taken to put this together.

Super practical ................ now we are where we are going!
In conclusion it is better to have a 'Dolby Vision' diffuser.

Only if you want to view Dolby Vision, otherwise an HDR display is fine if you choose Auto (and Mapping HDR10 or SDR.2020 if you have reason to use them).
